I've been thinking about what I like to read about and what I like to write about. I miss reading thoughtful articles at sites I follow. I miss writing them myself. We all tend to write short to the point. Because it takes longer to write an article that makes us think. And frankly, it takes you longer to read that article. Today I've got two things... One.. do you like reading an article with a bit more to it, not just photos & captions?

And second.. do you have parts of quilting, maybe of life, that you think about? Share with me in the comments!
Last night I started sewing the blocks together with sashing for my 2nd Grandma's kitchen.. the one with fewer blocks. You can see them all together here and I tell you size of the sashing I'm using
I managed to keep up and did 16 of the 25 blocks. Then Life happened.. because it happens to me as well as you! Since I make my Wed sew along blocks each week, not in advance, sometimes another project, or that thing called life.. happens. Only the main set of blocks were done. Because they had a deadline!
So 16 blocks is a great size quilt. And I love it, a LOT. But .... the mental nagging starts... Do I make 4 more blocks and make it longer? Or JUST SAY NO and make it a quilt?? Do I do MORE work... or move onto something new? And even in the bigger picture of Grandma's Kitchen, do I make all 25 blocks and have one representing one grandma, and other for my other grandma?
I decided to see what your thoughts are and shared in my facebook group this morning (read the awesome ongoing conversation HERE)
Having made about 700 quilts for my business, myself & for others, I need to have criteria to decide how to proceed, which is code for I can't do it all and really shouldn't.
DO I keep working on the quilt, or Finish it up?
Which really means, how much more of my precious time do I want to spend on this quilt? You can use this same set of questions to help you decide if you want to keep working on a project or not.
How To Decide if you want to keep working on a Project (ANY project)
- As is, has it meet the goal or purpose? - For this quilt the sew along is done. I made one full quilt. This was originally a bonus quilt. Not intended for any particular thing. Just having fun with a 2nd set of fabric. It was not intended for anyone and I have no special use for it. AND most important the project is done. For me, the goal is complete so I can leave it as is.
- How much more time will it take to get the project to the next stage where you 'think' you want it to be? For this quilt that would be 4 more blocks to make it bigger or 9 more to make all 25. It's big enough to use right now. And even if I do love it, will I love it that much more if it's larger? If you were making for a certain person or purpose (maybe a raffle quilt) and it really needs to be longer or wider, than your answer would be yes it's worth spending more time. For me, I would only be doing it to see how it looks. next question is really important to my decision.
- What will I be giving up, what will I not be doing, or what will I have to postpone... because I'm spending more time on this quilt? If you are sewing for fun, have no other deadlines, no other project you are eager to do, then it might be very worth the extra time. 4 easy blocks is not much, but it does add up.
- And is it worth doing and am I ok delaying other projects so I can finish this one? For me, this is the question that makes my decision. Do I want to spend my time doing this and NOT doing other projects I'm working on? Am I ok that I will delay starting a project that has a future deadline? Which down the road means I'll be crunching or worse.. stressed.. as the deadlines appears and I know my own decisions put me in that stressful place.
My Decision for this project
For me ... this quilt is officially done. And I feel really good about that! .... maybe... maybe I will change my mind.. wink!
BACK to my Questions
- Do you like reading longer articles about this. About life, decisions... maybe not even quilt related ones? Because really.. we all have a life outside of our pretty quilts.
- What type of decisions in making do you struggle with? Color, making choices, doing parts of the process?
- What type of things do you think about that are NOT quilting. ... Do you read books, crochet, knit, love to cook and try new things, garden, do projects with your kids/grandkids? I'd really love to hear a bit about YOU. Leave me a note below
