What an exciting day it was when I got the invite to do one of the OLFA/Aurifil Slice and stitch Challenges!
If we are just meeting, I’m Author and Quilt Designer Pat Sloan. My projects are always fun and easy to do, and I toss in a bit of my simple applique every so often. I’ve been using OLFA products since I started to quilt. I believed my beginning quilt teacher when she said to buy the best, so I did!

I’ve also been working with Aurifil since the started to produce thread for the quilting market.
You may follow my Designer of the Month series I do for them.
I decided to try the OLFA chenille cutter for my challenge because I’ve not done chenille
in a very long time. After this I’m TOTALLY hooked!!
Keeping with my theme to design a fun and easy project with a bit of applique,
I did some designing on the paper side of an extra piece of freezer paper I had on the table..
because that was the first thing I could find to write on!
This OLFA Chenille cutter is genius!
From the multiple widths to being able to rotate the blade to give a new cutting surface,
it made it SO easy to chenille! I’m ready to chenille everything!
Now let's make a pillow!
I am using my Bonnie Lane Fabric, some solids and the Verona thread pack from Aurifil

- Layer 2 solids fabrics, then 2 pillow fabrics, right side up
- With an Iron away marker, draw 1/2” diagonal lines across the pillow top with your OLFA ruler
- Pin the layers together
- Frixon Pens I like having several colors on hand https://shrsl.com/26eq9
- Sew ON the lines to create the channels
- TIP - I did a test piece first
- Repeat with the 4 rectangles which will be used to cut out the 2 leaves
Cut Chenille
- Select the letter ‘M’ size on your OLFA chenille cutter for the channel.
- The Green is my test piece. I also used it to cut the leaves
- OLFA Chenille Cutter https://amzn.to/3eLyFxC
- Slice the top 3 layers, NOT the bottom layer of both the pillow top and the leaf fabric
- The photo is the green piece I did for the leaves
Applique Directions
- I appliqued before I washed the pillow top so that the cuts under the applique would stay flat
- during the washing.
- Trace 3 tulips and 1 of each leaf on the paper side of the Heat n Bond lite
My Applique Book has LOTS of step by step photos http://shrsl.com/23352
- cut way the middle, then fuse to the BACK of the fabric
- cut on the line, and remove the paper
- Follow the photo to position the bias stems, then the flowers then the leaves.
- Fuse to the background
- I straight stitched the leaves & Stems.
- Blanket stitched the flowers
- See my Teach me to Applique for full color step outs
I really enjoyed being invited to this challenge, I can’t wait to see your pillows!
