*** The Project ***
Our February Aurifil Designer of the Month is artist Kathy Ross from Ireland who does amazing thread painting! You are going to be blown away by her work! I made her block WITHOUT the thread painting
My post today is a TUTORIAL on how to trace overlapping shapes and do fusible Applique.
At the END are both our blocks together!
Here is a closeup of Kathy's. You are going to love her, go on over and read my interview for Aurifil's Designer of the Month Series!

*** Featured Aurifil Collection ***
Each month the Aurifl color Builder box is named for a City in Italy, which is fun! Aurifil is an Italian thread company and for February Pompeii is our shades of Red!
Each designer is creating a block based on something about this thread collection. The Aurifil blocks are exciting and unique. At the end of the year I create a layout.
I also make the blocks in totally different fabrics, and have some tips each month for you on construction, let's continue!
*** Fabric bundle I'm starting with ***
I am starting with the Flour Garden bundle and went into my collection to find some pinky reds for the poppy

*** Pattern prep ***
- Verify your print 1" square IS 1", if it is not your shapes will not be the correct size
- Fold under the edge and line up to the 2nd page to make the full image
- I use Cute Washi tape to hold them together
*** Tracing Tips ***
- Look at each unit that is labeled and trace a FULL shape that is UNDER others.
- I make dashes for where a shape will be on top. I do not want to fit this like a puzzle, I want shapes to overlap
- You don't need a light box, but if you have one it will make it easier to see.
My Favorite Light Box right now only $35.99 and you might qualify for the %5 off coupon!
*** Pattern pieces Tip ***
- I trace all of one flower or leaf section together
- Make notes
- Keep them together until I fuse to the fabric
*** Fabric Fusing ***
- I cut away the wider areas so its soft
- Fuse to the WRONG side of your fabric
- My Teach me to Applique Book has ALL these details
TEACH ME TO APPLIQUE - PRINT or DIGITAL copy
*** CUT ON THE LINE ***
- This is raw edge applique so you are cutting ON the line
- Keep track of your pieces by laying them where they will go on the background
- Keep the pattern handy
*** Placement ***
- This is how to overlap the bottom area.
*** Thread! ***
- I match thread color to the fabric for applique
- I did pick a slightly darker red and green to outline the shapes
*** Applique stitches ***
- I am using the blanket stitch on my Baby Lock Solaris
- The Baby lock Jubilant has the SAME gorgeous stitch!
JUBILANT machine for a fabulous price and you might get free shipping!
