** Out West Chuck Wagons! **
With the world so interconnected, you are able to not only easily learn about regional food but also eat many of them locally in your area. So let’s explore Food!
Watching the old westerns you see the ‘Chuck Wagon’. I wondered if it was invented by anyone in particular and it was! The credit for creating the American chuck wagon is given to cattleman Charles Goodnight. Back in 1866, he had to have a dependable way to feed his workers as they trailed cattle, so the wagon that became the kitchen was needed.
What did the cowboys eat when out there for so long? It seems along the trail, they usually had beans, hard biscuits, various dried meat, dried fruit (I see a theme), and coffee, always coffee. Sometimes they had a bread called pan de campo “camp bread”. So I had to look up Camp Bread!
I bet they longed for a really wonderful meal when they got back to town, I know I would!

*** Fabric Cutting Tip ***
- Always cut JUST what is needed. In the example above I do NOT cut a 2nd Length of fabric for one square.
- I just cut what is need, which was one more block.
*** Making the Block ***
- BRING YOUR 'A' Game to this one. - NOT because it's hard, it's very easy sew and flip. BUT because you can easily turn things around and sew in the wrong position.
- Place all your pieces on your design board BEFORE SEWING anything.
DESIGN BOARDS, best investment in your quilting you can make!
*** Sew and Flip & checking ORDER ***
- I'm using my Baby lock Solaris built in light beam to show my sewing line.
- You can draw a diagonal line and sew ON the line.
- See more step by step photos in my Triangle book http://shrsl.com/20l7v
- After doing the top row sew and flip, lay the units next to each other to verify they are sewn correctly
WOOL pressing mats are amazing! http://shrsl.com/1z96p
*** Trimming the sew and flip units ***
- I'm using Antler designs trimming tool.
- Place the 1/4" line ON the seam
- Trim away
*** PRESSING & sewing the seam ***
- I find it more effective to press seams in opposite directions
- Nestle the two units together
- Pin and sew the seam
*** MEASURE each row! ***
- have you had blocks that do not turn out the correct size?
- Measuring each unit lets you find out where your seam allowance was off
*** DOUBLE Check ***
- Place all your pieces after doing all the sew and flips
- Double and triple check them before trimming
*** PRESSING & sewing the seam ***
- Press and trim your units and check again
- Sew each rows, and next is a tip for the middle
*** The Middle ***
- I find pressing seams open helps on this block
