A Quilty March Reveal!

** Pat's Crazy Quilty March Event! ** 

What better way to spend our 'bonus' day of the year, Feb 29, than to kick off something FUN!! 

And What is this you ask... GREAT Question! Let me tell you my crazy plan

** I hope you won't un-follow me! ** 

I've seen lots of groups do fun March Challenges

So here is what I decided on.. and I hope you stick with me and don't un-follow!  Watch my video above for when I posted about the idea.

Details:

• Each day in March.. which has 31 days.. even if you hear me say 30 .. it's not true!  It has 31... haha!.. oh yes.. back to each day in March I'll have a quilt related prompt. 
• I’ll have prompt related to the ‘theme’ listed so watch my video each day to know what it is! It might be to do something, to show/tell me something. It might be encouragement or a tip. On the Calendar is a theme but you won't know what the prompt is until that day's video.
• I'm going to do a short 3 to 15 minute video EVERY DAY...oh my I said it out loud, for sure.. EVERY DAY! It will post on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube. 
• Closed caption is, as always, on Youtube. It is auto-generated so not perfect, but lets you follow along
• On Fireside chat day THAT is the video. But I'll do a photo prompt in the morning so you don't have to wait until the evening.
• When you hear my prompt, do it!  It's going to be so FUN!  
• After you do the quilty task, Mark it off on your calendar and report back in the comments.

** Novels about the Western- A few Classics ** 

Are you an avid reader? With the ability to click and see so many things online, we can dive into any place to experience it by ‘seeing it’. But it is nice to stop and crack open a book every so often. To join the author and let their words, and our imagination, build the images of the West woven through their story telling.

A Few Classics to add to your reading list (even if you read on a kindle like I do!).

• 1903 “The Log of a Cowboy” by Andy Adams - reading old novels can be very tedious as they don’t write in our current style. The review said this one was very readable the whole way through. It has real life stories from the Author who spent 12 year in the saddle. It is fiction, but what cowboy story isn’t a bit of fiction? https://amzn.to/2T4Osgk
• 1912 “Riders of the Purple Sage” by Zane Grey - Have you read any Zane Grey? He was very prolific, and wrote a lot of easy to read Western novels which are sometimes called the ‘Dime Store’ novels. I can remember my grandfather telling me he read them as a kid. To see all the books and movies from Zane go to his wiki page. His home is also a museum.

• 1953 “Hondo” by Louis L’amour – I found it interesting that this book came after the movie. Many consider this his most classic story. I think it would be so interesting to listen to the audio version of it https://amzn.to/37QepFW
• 1968 “True Grit” by Charles Portis – You might have seen this as a movie, it’s been made into several. The novel has you following a 14 year old girl seeking revenge for the murder of her father and a one-eyed US Marshal named Rooster Cogburn that she takes with her to ‘get the job done’. Ok.. *** Fabric Cutting Tip ***

• Always cut JUST what is needed, we are using just a little bit of the border fabric so only cut the 3 squares.
• This holds true for ALL the fabrics

*** Making the HST ***

• For the love of Triangles this block makes me happy! 
• Draw a line on the light fabric with a frixon pen

*** Beam me up! ***

• I'm using my Baby lock Solaris built in light beam to show my sewing line.
• It has 2 lines, one is the sewing on the left, the one on the right stays down the center.
• If I sew with the light beam I do not need to draw lines, which is.. a miracle!

*** Trimming to Size ***

• Cut the Square in half between the sewn lines
• Place the 2 1/2" line ON the seam
• Trim away to create a 2.5" Half Square Triangle

Bonnie Lane Sew Alongs - Twinkling Stars!

*** Bonnie Lane Sew Along Assignments ***

   1. So many people asked me to run a small Sew Along with my Bonnie Lane fabric. So we'll use the Table runner kit but this time make it as a 2 x 2 setting using the kit backing as a border!

*** Table Topper  ***

Time to make the first block!

It's a nice easy pace to make a cute table topper or use as a baby quilt!

It will be 42" x 42". If you want it larger buy some border fabric or more of my fabric for a bigger quilt. The pattern also has several size options for larger quilts!

*** Flying Geese Unit ***

• Draw a line on the back of the star point squares
• Use a Frixon pen, which will disappear when you press.

 *** Sew & Flip tips ***

• Use an open toe foot for visibility
• Sew from the SIDE towards the tip. Don't start at the TIP or you have more chances of the end getting sucked into your machine.
• Sew ON the line.

*** GREAT Tool ***

• Use the folded corner ruler to trim away leaving a 1/4" seam allowance
• Sew the 2nd star point

*** Size DOES matter, check it! ***

• I'm using my OLFA ruler to verify the unit size
• If it is not correct, fix it.

*** Do you often chop off points? ***

• My tip for this unit is to sew with the flying geese on TOP so you can clearly see the intersection you are going for.
• When you have this unit on the bottom you can't see the intersection
• Try it!

*** What's Next ***

• Next time we'll do either the car and we are finished! 
• NOTE - The Directional Car Images Need reversed for Fusible Applique Barb (the designer) gave all the shapes in the direction of the pattern cover. If you are doing fusible applique, all the directional shapes need reversed so the car is pointed to the right like you see in the photo. 
• If you want to start piecing the stars, go for it!
