Perfect 5 blocks 7 & 8 with my favorite from the Charm pack book

*** My Blocks *** 

Have you ever made just one block from a pattern to see how you like it?  That is what I'm doing with the Perfect 5 book. The Fat Quarter shop has a whole sampler you can make, I'm going to do a smaller version as I'm making just one of each of the 16 quilts.. so far I have 2 favorites that I will be making full quilts from. 

• The little block is Pizzelle, and it IS my favorite one to make so far! 
• Larger block is, of course, Pinwheel cookies!
• Below is a tip, all the blocks together, and share your blocks at the end!
• I'm making one of each block from the bonus sampler that goes along with the Perfect 5 book.  The sampler sheet & photo are at the end. 
• I'm using a Pepper & Flax Jolly bar cut in half- there are not that many of these so be sure to get one!
• and the background is my charcoal from Bonnie Lane Fabric - it's coming back into stock

*** TIP *** 

• Use the trimmer to cut away the triangles
• Then sew those triangles as start and stop units

• Be sure to pin so that your blocks are lined up correctly
• It only takes an extra few seconds and is so worth it!

*** Oct 9 to Dec 4- Perfect 5 Sew Along *** 

The 'Perfect 5' is a wonderful new book with 16 quilt patterns that use charm packs... thus the '5'!  Charm packs are 5" squares.  I love how my blocks are coming together

The Perfect 5 Book has

• All the quilts named a cookie, you had me at this one!
• 4 quilt patterns using just 1 charm pack... perfect right? For that 'one pack' you bought. 
• 4 that use 2 packs - this is the same as a jolly bar
• 4 using 3 charm packs
• and 4 quilt patterns using 4 charm packs, which is the same as a layer cake!

Details:

• From Oct 9 to Dec 4 I'm sewing along using the quilt blocks in the book to do a version of the Sampler above that the Fat Quarter Shop is doing
• Once a week you'll make the assigned number of blocks for the sampler.

** Pattern Details ** 

• REQUIRED Pattern, includes 4 sizes

• Quilt - 65 ½” x 82 1/2”

*** The Video ***

*** Making one Block ***

• These are the 3 blocks to make this week.
• The fabric swatches below it to help you select the same fabric I am using
• I highly recommend that you make ONE block to read through the directions and get to know the feel of things
• Below is a photo tutorial, all blocks are made the same.
• After you make one block you can decide an approach to making the quilt
  • Cut all the fabric then sew
  • Cut for one block, sew that block
  • Cut ALL the background fabric, then cut by block
• All methods work. Maybe try a new way of approaching it. Maybe you never cut it all at once, give it a try this time. Or instead cut the backgrounds all at once, then cut for each block's fabric.

• Use a design board to keep your project organized
• And Alphabitties to keep track of your pieces

*** Sew and Flip Units ***

• Draw a line with the iron away marker

• Use the trimmer to cut away the triangles
• Then sew those triangles as start and stop units (see video)

*** Corner units ***

• Position them and then chain sew the stack of 4

*** Measuring for Accuracy AS YOU GO ***

• I want to show you why you need to measure as you go.,
• In this sample I did for you, you can see that the block is a bit wider in 2 places
• If you do not fix this, your block will grow in size and be too large.
• If the block was smaller a this point, it will continue to be smaller and not be the correct size at the end
• How to fix it.  On this block you could just trim those away by rotating the block so those 2 sides are on the outside
• Or you can take apart your block and sew it again with more accuracy. The solution depends on the block 

• Here are the sew and flip units
• I have step by step directions in my Triangle book for this

*** Verify your layout ***

• I find it very helpful to have this by the side of my machine.
• It's easy to rotate units you didn't mean to rotate

*** Making the star points ***

• Sew and flip one on each side
• Then do the other 2 sides after you trim

• Our block looks fabulous!

*** Sewing the Rows ***

• I place the row on the TOP that has the most intersections I want to be sure i hit.

Hallie R - The one spot I have to stay on top of is my dining room table! All of the mail and things from that day get put there as soon as someone walks in the house. My toughest spot to tackle, which is this weeks "tidy up" project, is my work table. I need to reorganize it so I can get going on those UFO's!

Coriene R - The one spot or area that’s constantly under attack by things is my kitchen island. Mail, groceries, meal prep... no one else realizes that they have to put things away and wipe up when they are done, sort through things. My office and closet are due for deep cleaning though. My sewing area gets tidied up every time I’m done for the day. If it’s a little messy because I’ve dumped some things around the area, I have to pick up first. I just can’t sew in a mess!
