Are you ready for block #3... this means first row done! Thank you for joining me and the Fat Quarter shop!

- Tips and tools I find useful
All my tips and photos will be with my Bonnie Lane here are the first 3 blocks together! I'm also make the Solid Version with the Kit and the Blue version with my friend Christopher's fabric. I love showing you the same quilt done in different fabrics!
Check out the blocks at the end, including someone FIRST Quilt block!
SHARE your Blocks at the end!
My Fabric for the Quilt along:
- I will be making my quilt with my Bonnie Lane fabric using these 12 pieces, a sashing and extra for a border.
- Sewing with My Aurifil Thread.
- And during the sew along I'll be referencing to my Teach me book. If you have the book you can make notes, and be able to refer back to it for many of the things we'll be doing.
TROUBLE SHOOTING TIPS Today!
- Today my first trouble shooting tip is to PRESS that seam flat before adding more strips. If you don't you won't come out the correct size.
- I have a few more trouble shooting tips after the video
Kimberly walks through the whole block making process with great tips like
- how to cut long strips
- explaining the 'quilt math'
- pressing directions
- lining up the strips and pinning
Tips in my Book:
- In my Teach Me to make my First Quilt Book I have this section on how be sure your block is square
- Pick up a copy it's a great companion to this quilt along
**BUY my Teach Me to make my First Quilt Book
- Sometimes things happen and you don't have a perfectly sewn section.
- I've created this series to show you what to look for and a way to recover.
- it's is absolutely necessary to measure DURING the sewing not just when done. Why? Read on!
- Top left does not reach the 8.5" mark and bottom right is Larger than 8.5".
- If you did not know this and added strips your block will be uneven. You can correct this and move on.
- Taking the strip off is one option. But i have another
- This is a close up view from above. To get that end LARGER I must have had the strip shift as I sewed it on so that it was not even.
- And on the top where it is short, same thing in revers.
Ruler - This is a very useful size 6.5" x 12.5"
- Here on the back you can see that my one seam is not even, which caused some of the issue in this sample
The Fix:
- If you didn't want to remove the strip you can still sew the one one to it. But you must be careful
- If you just lined up the edge what would happen? it would be wrong. The size of the block would be off
- Instead line up the edges that ARE correct, and PIN so you don't try pulling them to match
- How many times do you think you've matched uneven edges and introduced more size error? Which does compound as you go
- Here I'm sewing it, you can see there is plenty of charcoal floral to get in the seam
- And the final seam.
- Something Borrowed I'm working with a Fat Quarter Bundle.
My 3rd Version:
- Is the kit! It is very fun to just follow the kit and concentrate on technique.
For me I love seeing how the quilts develop in other fabrics. Several of the designers sewing along are using other fabrics too, so be sure to visit them, links below.

Tools I recommend:
- OLFA TOOLS, there is a combo of the True Blue mat and ruler! Also check out the folding mat, they work SO well if you want it for travel or have space issues
- 44% OFF - ON SALE The Jubilant it is a really great price and you might get free shipping to! Ships right to you and at 14lbs with a blanket stitch, it's amazing!
- You will need a few rulers to start. I highly recommend the 6.5" square and the 6.5" x 24.5" size to start. Also if you have not upgraded your rulers since your first beginner class... go NOW and do it, you'll wonder why you waited so long
- The Dritz Needle Inserter & needle Threader are a handy tool to have. Helps you hold your needle to replace it and if you don't have an automatic threader on your machine, this one works great
- Mini Iron
- Wool Pressing Mat
- The Thread cutter basket is SO useful! you can keep your Wonderclips or Alhabitties in it, top has a thread cutter, and the side has a magnet for pins!
- Last is a container for the project. I saw these and feel in love. They are REALLY Sturdy (I'm picky on that) and many colors and sizes. This one expands so it can be double the size if needed. I like to keep my project things all together. Since it folds up, I can store it if I don't have project for it.
