Are you ready for block #1... let's do it!
I am thrilled you joined me and the Fat Quarter shop for Ultimate Beginner's quilt along!
Each week I'll have
- the FREE Patterns to download at the end it's in PINK
- The Video from Kimberly at the Fat Quarter shop
- Tips and tools I find useful
All my tips and photos will be with my Bonnie Lane and I'm also make the Solid Version with the Kit and the Blue version with my friend Christopher's fabric. I love showing you the same quilt done in different fabrics!
SHARE your Blocks at the end!
My Fabric for the Quilt along:
- I will be making my quilt with my Bonnie Lane fabric using these 12 pieces, a sashing and extra for a border.
- Sewing with My Aurifil Thread.
- And during the sew along I'll be referencing to my Teach me book. If you have the book you can make notes, and be able to refer back to it for many of the things we'll be doing.
TIP - Supply List Conversion:
- I took a snippet from each fabric and taped it on the supply list (that you can download below)
- If you like this idea, get my FQ bundle, which has ALL the fabric in the line, and you can save the blue and yellow for another project.
I think I've decided to give this to my mom, who IS Bonnie Lane... shhhh.. don't tell her.
Kimberly walks through the whole block making process with great tips like
- how to line up your fabric for cutting
- why pressing direction is important
- sewing order
My tips are below on trimming and lesson from my Teach Me Book
Tips in my Book:
- I have all kinds of tips like this one in my Teach Me to make my First Quilt Book
- A great companion to this quilt along
- NOTE - ONLY CUT THE UNITS YOU NEED. Don't cut long strip. Learn to cut just what is needed. This is more frugal and the pattern is NOT written for cutting strips. If you cut a strip there will be waste and in some cases you might have cut fabric you need for another block.
- This is my go to way to trim that strip. I always line up with a line on the ruler and not the top edge. This gives me a lot of stability and the ruler does not shift to make a weird cut
- A lot of you sewing along have made quilts and have some tools already. I'm going to be sharing tools and tips for you to think about upgrading. Not necessary but they make quilting so much easier. Like this 6.5" x 12.5" ruler and a wonderful Olfa rotary cutter.
Ruler - This is a very useful size 6.5" x 12.5"
Directional Fabric:
- Take a minute to decide if you want stripes vertical or Horizontal
Pressing Tips:
- First I press the seam to warm it. I'm using this really effective mini iron, great for small spaces and for travel
- The I flip the strip 'open' or 'up'. You'll hear people describe this with different terms. It mean we are getting the pretty side facing up.
- Be sure you have the seam FLAT and there is no TUCK along the edge. I'm using wool pressing mats for this and I love them. If you are brand new, this will be something to think about getting once you know you love quilting.
My 2nd Version:
- Something Borrowed is a new line from my good friend Christopher of the Tattooed Quilter. I totally caved and I'm going to do a 2nd version in these colors, I have someone in mind to give it to
My 3rd Version:
Is the kit! I have NEVER made a quilt with ALL solids, so I just have to do it!
For me I love seeing how the quilts develop in other fabrics. Several of the designers sewing along are using other fabrics too, so be sure to visit them, links below.

Tools I recommend:
- OLFA TOOLS, there is a combo of the True Blue mat and ruler! Also check out the folding mat, they work SO well if you want it for travel or have space issues
- ON SALE The Jubilant it is a really great price and you might get free shipping to! Ships right to you and at 14lbs with a blanket stitch, it's amazing!
- You will need a few rulers to start. I highly recommend the 6.5" square and the 6.5" x 24.5" size to start. Also if you have not upgraded your rulers since your first beginner class... go NOW and do it, you'll wonder why you waited so long
- The Dritz Needle Inserter & needle Threader are a handy tool to have. Helps you hold your needle to replace it and if you don't have an automatic threader on your machine, this one works great
- Mini Iron
- Wool Pressing Mat
- The Thread cutter basket is SO useful! you can keep your Wonderclips or Alhabitties in it, top has a thread cutter, and the side has a magnet for pins!
- Last is a container for the project. I saw these and feel in love. They are REALLY Sturdy (I'm picky on that) and many colors and sizes. This one expands so it can be double the size if needed. I like to keep my project things all together. Since it folds up, I can store it if I don't have project for it.
