Today I have not one but TWO cool things today. Tips for Block #2 of Witch's Night Out Sew Along and The Ultimate Beginners Quilt Along!
Ready?
Join me, the Fat Quarter shop and a group of designer friends to make a basic beginner quilt.
WHY should you join?
- Are you self taught and never learned to read a pattern? I'll teach you how while we make this quilt
- Has it been awhile since you made a quilt? Do you feel rusty on new tools and ways of doing things?
- Have you only followed a video to make a quilt with simple squares and want to learn to make other things? This quilt touches all the basic block shapes you need to know how to do.
- And of course, anyone who is ready to make their first quilt!
This beautiful sampler quilt was designed by the Fat Quarter shop to build your skills, block by block. This is the Ultimate Beginner Quilt which measures 50″ square and is made with 12 fat quarters plus fabric for the sashing and border. For this sew-along, you have options – you can make the quilt that looks like ours with The Ultimate Beginner Quilt Kit, or you can choose your own fabrics and make it your own. For your other quilting supplies, The Ultimate Sewing Notions Kit has all of our favorite top-quality notions to give you a good start on your quilting journey!
The Patterns are FREE and you'll find them here!
For this quilt you’ll need the following fabric amounts:
• 12 Fat Quarters*
• 7/8 Yards neutral color (we chose white) for sashing which goes between the blocks
• 1 1/8 Yards for the border
• 3 3/8 Yards for the back of the quilt
For the batting, I really like Happy Cloud Batting in Throw Size
*A Fat Quarter is a quarter of a yard that’s cut wider, at 18″ x 21″ so that you have more room to work with.Read more about various types of fabric precuts.

What I'll be doing
Each week I'll share additional tips of my own and sections of my Teach me To Make my first Quilt book. You don't need my book to make this sew along, but I think you'll see how it's a great companion to teach you the basics. So if you pick it up with your fabrics you can make notes in my book as you go along.
Sew Along Schedule
Each week my friend Kimberly Jolly, who owns the Fat Quarter shop, will do a video week to show you how to sew each part of this quilt from start to finish. I will put her video here in my article about the block and tips I have for the week.

Block #2 of Witches night out, another set of tiny pumpkins! I have a few tips below.
I'm mixing up the order we are sewing from the book so that we do a mix of pumpkins, then a 'non pumpkin' blocks.
** Witch's Night Out Project Page
There are a lot of sew and flip units for these. A video tip for you.
My guide beam is built into several of the Babylock machines. I know it's in the Cresendo and this is the Solaris
TIP:
- READ the directions, unlike some people (eye roll) ...
- Nothing like a quick little 'unsew'.. then onto reading the proper sewing order
CONVERSION and a TIP:
- Here is one pumpkin from the starter bundle, I love how it turned out!
- Remember that you can add in some fabric from your stash to make this quilt your own
- Use a Book Stand to keep track, i love being able to see a finished one right by my machine
REQUIRED Witch's Night Out Book
Some of you pre-ordered a kit just like the book which is what I'm sewing with.
This book also has a darling pumpkin table runner option that is 16" x 58" if you want to make that for the sew along. I'm thinking of making a few of the blocks with the starter for a little wall hanging. Stay tuned to see if that happens!
