I showed you the Norm & Nanette Gnome kit.. and you know what.. I decided to get it started because it's just so cute!
PLUS it's got me thinking about how we make.
(You can get the pattern booklet or the kit HERE)
In my Fireside chat I talked about how we approach making a quilt.
- Do you cut it all at once?
- Or do you cut, then sew, cut, then sew?
- Or do both depending on the project?
The Norm & Nanette directions are written for cutting it all and the making it. Because it's very efficient that way.
But I want to make just one block first to see how it looks

I'm also thinking about making in general
- Do you start new things on an impulse.. (HELLO... that's what's going on here right now!)
- Do you have a plan? Sewing UFOs on Monday night, Wednesday is Block Wednesday (it should be if it's not )
- Do you even have a list of what you are making?
This all came swirling into my thoughts from multiple places. First was from a wonderful Splendid Sampler quilter who works on that project on Thursday. And has other projects assigned for other days.
And this seems to be how some of the Cross stitch people do it. They have Merry Monday for christmas cross stitch, Witchy Friday for fall/halloween.
Just because I run a design business does not mean I sew all day. Much like most of you, I do the business stuff during the day and the sewing is evenings and weekends. Sometimes I have an afternoon to sew.
To do something like my fireside chat or this article, It takes having a plan, doing photos, writing, publishing.. all are what my day is like. Working on the computer.
So I thought the plan of having some of the days of week assigned to do a certain projects is something I'd like to try. Maybe 3 of the 7 days will be assigned.. Like UFO, Sew along, New things .. have to have new things!
Does it appeal to you to have 3 days of the week assigned to do certain projects?
Above is a GREAT chart in the Norm & Nanette book! It shows you each fabric needed for each Gnome... LOVE IT!
I've decided to do ONE Norm block first. The pattern is SO well written that the initial cutting was necessary. I've got the face parts ready.
And I've also decided that the Norm's will have the same beard fabric but I'm going to switch up Nanette's hair by using multiple fabrics from my stash. I will share those soon!
Here is Norm in his Green outfit for March!! the booklet gives you directions for just making one Norm and one Nanette too if you want a wall hanging..
