When I want to learn a new tool, I go basic!
It's SO MUCH easier to learn something new by using your scraps and staying focused on what is important, learning.
In the video I'm walking you through the whole process of how I cut up scraps to create my 'Free Quilts' like the green one behind me. I show you using the Gemini Die cutter step by step. it's SO easy!

Below are some up close photos of things I mentioned in the video and at the end is another video on the quarter square triangle dies
This is the cutting side of the die
It's a 'ridge' and is NOT sharp, but it is very very durable and sturdy.
This 'ridge' edge FACES the fabric so the machine can 'press out' the shape.
This is the top side of the die, it's smooth
It must always face you when layering.
Here are my plates, they will look like this, curved. And they will have pressing marks on all them
GEMINI TIP: Rotate ALL the plates and the position of the die on it so you get full use of them. Do this EACH TIME you run the die through
Layering is Bottom to top
- Clear plate
- Metal
- FABRIC
- Die with ridge side DOWN
- Opaque Plastic plate
- Clear plate
I am cutting the squares and triangle to make 'free' quilts. There are units I sew as I start and stop patchwork projects.
Use your container lid to keep track of the dies and squares as you go
My Go To's shapes are
- 2.5" squares
- 2.5" HST
- 1.5" squares as I think I'll do some tiny 9paches for the center of stars
- Larger 3.5" squares
I keep my scrap containers in my Koala Studios cabinet
They are easy to get to and fit perfectly
I USE CLEAR Shoe Boxes with lids
