I’m constantly inspired by how a squares, rectangles and HSTs can turn into about 5 million different blocks. Today, the pinwheel swirl takes us for a spin.
As always the Red & Green is just like the quilt in the book. I am doing the tips with Something Blue Fabric as I make a 2nd quilt
How This Works:
- The Book is Required, it has the sampler of 20 blocks and the book has 10 additional projects using the blocks.
- CLICK HERE for Supply list for both colors
- Christmas Figs fabric
- Something Blue Fabric designed by my friend Edyta
- Every other Friday of the month I'll post notes about this weeks block. I'm doing the blocks in the order they are in for the book, you have all the patterns in the book so you can work on it anytime you like.
- There are lots of triangles, so pick up my Triangle book to have step by step photos and additional options for making them.
TIPS for Making the Blue version
- I cut just what is needed. I do not subcut as my fabric is not an exact substitution for the red/green quilt in the book. I don't want to waste any fabric
TIPS
- Mark your cut shapes to keep track. The alphabitties are perfect as they have numbers and letters to match the book.
- use a Design board to keep things in order
- cut 2 strips of A then subcut those per the directions in the book
- B & C are the same fabric. Cut 32 squares. I find this made it easier for me.
- I used up smaller and odd pieces first before cutting into the larger ones. F is what I used for the stems of the lily, so I cut the squares from the left over triangles pieces first.
- If you prefer MORE contrast between the blue fabrics, Use a different blue for 'E"
Pat's Tips
- Sew and flip construction for the flying geese, you should be getting good at it!
- If you don't want to use the method for Half Square Triangles in the book, use one from My Triangle book You can do multiples at a time
- Once you make the Flying gees & HST you then sew one unit that makes the block. I love this!
TIP
-
I sew with the flying geese unit on top, checking that that point is centered over the seam on of the bottom 2 flying geese
- I did a video, that's next
BUY a good Ruler, this is my fav
And buy a GREAT rotary cutter, Olfa in Pink, Turquoise and Purple!

- Check your position before sewing.
- Stack all 4 blocks, note there is ONE flying geese unit is on the outside of each edge. Be sure they are positioned correctly
