I am SO excited with my 2019 Block of the Month theme "Out of this World"!! Today is the day for Block #1..

Did you know this is my 6th year of designing, writing  and hosting a Free Mystery Block of the Month (BOM) for FreeQuiltPatterns.info.  If you are new to my sew alongs, read at the end to learn how this one works.

Do you have a love of all things Space like I do?  

Did you watch the moon landings and get hooked? Do you work in the space industry? Do you love the cartoons, TV shows, movies, and space heros?  All of these are going to be woven into my stories of space that my Block of the Month will tell. 

When I saw this fabric line the space idea was IT!! Those darling moons and cute fabrics just pulled me right in.

This is a mystery so you can't see the layout yet, but I will release it early on in the project, Just like I always do.

Block #1 is about the Space Shuttle

My husband (the Shipping Department) took this photo during one of our visits to the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles Airport in Virginia, which is right up the road from me. Home to the Discovery space shuttle. I share my story each month with you at our download page.(see link at the end) 

This exhibit thrills me each and every time I am able to go. I need another visit, it's been awhile!

Block #9 is FUN!!  Even if you do like me and make some wrong, which is pretty hard to make some wrong, but I did it and have a 'save' to show you.

As always the Red & Green is just like the quilt in the book. I am doing the tips with Something Blue Fabric  as I make a 2nd quilt

How This Works:

• The Book is Required, it has the sampler of 20 blocks and the book has 10 additional projects using the blocks.

• Every other Friday of the month I'll post notes about this weeks block. I'm doing the blocks in the order they are in for the book, you have all the patterns in the book so you can work on it anytime you like. 
• There are lots of triangles, so pick up my Triangle book to have step by step photos and additional options for making them. 

TIPS for Making the Blue version

• I tossed in an extra blue fabric. If you have scraps from prior blocks THIS is the block to use them up!
• I cut just what is needed. I do not subcut as my fabric is not an exact substitution for the red/green quilt in the book. I don't want to waste any fabric

TIPS

• Mark your cut shapes to keep track. The alphabitties are perfect as they have numbers and letters to match the book. 
• use a Design board to keep things in order
• I did an F from scraps
• Also I used 2 cream fabrics like the red/green version does
• The dots are MY FAVORITE!!! You can buy the dot fabric HERE

Pat's Tips 

• Sew and flip construction for corners. At the front part of my video I show you how to use this Trimming ruler. I like using a trimming ruler for the small pieces because I don't make mistakes cutting.

• BUY a good 6.5" Ruler, this is my fav
• BUY the Trimming Ruler
• And buy a GREAT rotary cutter, Olfa in Pink, Turquoise and Purple!
• And get those darling pink scissors with butterfly handles!

A fun FREE small quilt to make!

I'm the last month of the Fat Quarter shops year of color bundles, and my bundle is, I'm sure you know.... 

Red!! I was so excited when the color choices came out and I was able to select the red month, yeah! I have a project you can do super fast to enjoy the bundle. Also it's fabulous to add to your collection to enhance your red stack. Mine seems get used up so quickly. Red Fat Quarter Bundle

For my project I'm pairing the red with pale pinks that I have in my collection. Looking to use up a few older pieces to make room for new. And in each block I used the essential white with small red dots

Because every project needs a dot!

I'm using my "Mending Basket" block. 

Now trim away by positioning the line on the ruler right on your seam.

I'm using

• The Folded corner Trimming tool

This block is designed to show off the prints with as few seams as possible. 

To be sure I am in the right spot for sewing units together, I put a pin through all the layers the peek to see that it's right where I need to be. 

Then I use my laser beam on my Baby lock Destiny II to guide me right to the spot I need to be.

Makes it so simple as I don't shift over too far either way.

My block is called the Mending Basket block . So I quilted the spools in the mending basket block like it has thread

I used 

• 50 Wt Aurifil
• ON SALE My Thread Kit, and is almost gone, so you should snag one!

This recipe fabric is my favorite!! 

I quilted with 50 wt aurifil thread using my walking foot. You can see the outline quilting I did. It's effective and you can do this on your machine!

• Buy Recipe fabric, you'll want to do something fun!

I had to finish this off with an essential lipstick red stripe.

I used my binding by machine method.. details HERE

Your 4 block quilt can be put on the wall or use for the center of your table.

At the end of the pattern is a diagram for making a lap size.  This block is perfect for busting those larger scraps, now I want a bed size too!
