I'm excited about Block #3 of the Christmas Figs sew along it's the Flying Geese Criss Cross!
We are sewing from Joanna's Christmas Fig book. Red & Green like the book, then I selected Something Blue Fabric from my friend Edyta to do a second quilt.
How This Works:
- The Book is Required, it has the sampler of 20 blocks and the book has 10 additional projects using the blocks.

- On the 2nd Friday & last Friday of the month I'll post notes about the next book.
- I'm doing the blocks in the order they are in for the book.
- You have all the patterns in the book so you can work on it anytime you like.
- There are lots of triangles, so pick up my Triangle book to have step by step photos and additional options for making them.
- For each block I'll have a few tips!
TIPS for Making the Blue version
- The Blue fabric is the LIGHTER of the 2 in the Fat Quarter Bundle.
- Look CAREFULLY at the sizes, these blocks have lots of sizes. DOUBLE CHECK before cutting ANYTHING
- Lay blocks out before sewing so you don’t mix up the pieces
- When cutting from a mix of fabric that is NOT exactly like the book, just just what you need. The book is written to be efficient if you are using the same fabric placements, the blue version is NOT using all the same fabric placement.
- RED & GREEN - The extra cuts for the Red & Green are used later in another block, so keep track of them in a bag.
Tips for Block #3
This is a fun easy block with Sew And Flip flying geese. If you are going scrappy you can make more than 1 Flying geese block at a time using my step by step directions on page 23 in my Triangle Book

for the tan rectangles you need a total of 8. I cut one strip and got all 8 from that plus a 2 of the squares. Then cut the remaining squares

I like to stay very organized when sewing single blocks. It's easy to get turned around.

- This blue fabric is directional, so I want all the stripes going the same direction
- Fold back to verify placement
- I did a little video chat and showed all the blocks too!

TIP:
- I love using my Babylock Destiny II's laser beam so I don't have to draw any lines.
- There are some great tools to put on the bed of your machine, I like this Easy Guide you place on the bed of your machine
- Press the triangle over.
- I'm using a thick wool pressing mat and i am IN LOVE with these! They are very firm which is excellent for making your blocks flat, And flat blocks help you keep your patchwork accurate.
- Turn over the unit and check that no blue is seen on the back side. If it is, you didn't sew exactly on the diagonal.

TIP:
- I like this ruler by my friend Doug. You can check the width of your unit while you are trimming
- Place the diagonal on the seam line, trim.
- The ruler does a few other things too and he has an instruction sheet with it
- You can then sew those into teeny tiny HST units.

All ready to sew the geese units!
The pile of tiny triangles are what was trimmed away. I'm still debating on if I want to sew them up ...

Pat's TIP
- When sewing the geese together sew on the side where you see the intersection. This way you won't chop off the points
- The book has pressing directions too for those of you that like that!
