Block #8 of my FREE Let's Go Camping Sew Along!

For Block #8 the activity theme came about when a friend said they were camping with a large group and lots of kids. I really wondered what fun things they had planned!

Block #1 Christmas Fig Sew Along

My friend Joanna of Figtree loves antique quilts. She designed this quilt using vintage blocks in a gorgeous and classic Red/Green/Cream and I just had to make it. And since it's always more fun to make with friends, I invited you to sew along with me!

Her book is called Christmas Figs and when I saw the blocks I immediately thought how pretty it would be in Blue.

So I'm sewing the quilt with the same Red & Green, then I selected Something Blue from my friend Edyta to do a second quilt.

How This Works:

• The Book is Required, it has the sampler of 20 blocks and the book has 10 additional projects using the blocks. 
• CLICK HERE for Supply list for both colors 
• On the Last Friday and the 2nd Friday of the month I'll post notes about the next book.(yes block 1 was a day early, because I couldn't wait!)
• Starts today and Ends June 2019.
• I'm doing the blocks in the order they are in for the book.
• You have all the patterns in the book so you can work on it anytime you like. 
• There are lots of triangles, so pick up my Triangle book to have step by step photos and additional options for making them. 
• For each block I'll have a few tips!

TIPS for Making the Blue version

• Look CAREFULLY at the sizes, these blocks have lots of sizes.  DOUBLE CHECK before cutting
• Lay blocks out before sewing so you don’t mix up the pieces
• When cutting from a mix of fabric that is NOT exactly like the book, cut just ONE strip and subcut to see if you get all you need. The book is written to be efficient if you are using the same fabric placements, the blue version is NOT using all the same fabric placement. So I don’t want to cut an extra strip that is not needed.
• The extra cuts for the Red & Green are used later in another block, so keep track of them in a bag.

Tips for Block #1

• The book is written to do 2 HST at a time. If you want to do more at a time I have directions in my TRIANGLE book
• I love using my Babylock Destiny II's laser beam so I don't have to draw any lines.

TIP:

• My favorite way to trim HST units is with THIS RULER
• Place the 2 1/2" LINE on the SEAM. 
• Trim the 2 sides
• Press open, and trim away the little tails or dog ears if you like. 

 

TIP:

• For the Blue and Tan fabrics this print is very soft and has some very light areas.
• After I made all the HST I auditioned them before sewing. 
• I ended up switching out the lower 2 blocks to ones with a strong blue so that I didn't lose the center image

TIP:

• Be sure you download the supply list or read what is used for the blue one

A review of what's included at Bluprint

I've been exploring what is at Bluprint, and it's pretty exciting! I give you the lay of the land and a few of my favorite finds

If you have been familiar with Craftsy they were purchased by the NBC network awhile ago.

• They are changing the system to create a new online Lifestyle site called 'MyBluPrint' that has put learning in a format more like you see on TV, but without the commercials, which is pretty darn neat!  
• Over the next few months I'll do a series of article to highlight features, let's get started!

The menu of topics sends you to a more detailed list of options by topic, Such as: 

• OUR FAVORITES - might be a tutorial, a pattern or a class
• BEST FOR BEGINNERS - so if you are new, this will get your started to the topic
• PROJECT IDEAS
• A Current Article or tutorial
• CLASSES followed by the whole list of what's available.

I like having the highlights section first to get me ideas and inspiration!

On the right side is the 'Featured section'. This is the area that I've been exploring. Let's look at SPARK first, I believe this is the most exciting new section (at least until I explore the others, wink!)

• There are short interviews with artists, makers, and creators. I'm very inspired by how creative people work in any medium. I really loved reading the interview then watching Stephen "tWitch" Boss, a dancer, choreographer and entertainer.  He has such great passion for what he does.
• It reminds me that we all need to at times look at other creative people as we can be so inspired by their energy. 

A few Other Interviews I loved are

• Lauri Kranz on gardening, it's a great interview
• Griffon Ramsey creates art with a chain saw, and her story to how this happened is inspiring
• Crochet Artist Olek, Watch the video, you will TOTALLY relate to her thoughts on never getting tired of what you love!
