FREE Aurifil Designer Block Challenge, 2018 Block 5

In 2010 I created the first original Block of the month for Aurifil and it was so much fun we've done it ever year since! 2018 is the start of my 8th year running this super fun program.  Learn more about how it works at our intro of the 2018 team

When our May designer, Minki Kim. I love her bags and applique, and this block is so darling!

Minki recreated the amazing tile that she loves into her block.  

I wanted to show you the block without applique for those that want to try it this way.

Minki makes her blocks without foundation, so they are a little over sized. I have some tips for how I handled that

• Cut all the STRIPS 1/2" longer if you want some wiggle room
• Absolutely center each one where I say to center it
• Use the marker (FIND HERE) to track the fabric, I find it helps when my colors don't match the designers. 

1. Sew 2 squares
2. Position the other dark square lined up with the light end
3. Sew from the middle like my photo
4. this is what it looks like, press open

1. This is how it looks before trimming
2. Trim by lining up the horizontal on the 1/4" and keep a vertical line right down the center of the middle square like my white line is in the photo.
3. Trim
4. Take the next strip and PRESS it in half to create a crease.

1....I'm repeating this here because it's SUPER Important to  PRESS it in half to create a crease.

2... & 3 Line up the crease and the center of the unit with the squares.  (oops photos out of order so just go with it)

4 ... Sew the 1/4"

5... Press

1. You repeat the press and position for each additional strip

1. Trimming is a 'float' on the block. I line up the horizontal of my 6 1/2" ruler from corner to corner before trimming
2. Take your time on this
