In 2010 I created the first original Block of the month for Aurifil and it was so much fun we've done it ever year since! 2018 is the start of my 8th year running this super fun program. Learn more about how it works at our intro of the 2018 team
To kick off 2018, shop owner and author Katja Marek designed the first block in her signature color, look at the gorgeous details. I love her story to go with our theme & it's the inspiration behind her design. Remember that each month we pick a Thread Kit winner from the blocks posted.

This year for my version I'm using a few consistent fabrics
I am now on the hunt for some unique and fun black & white prints to sprinkle in!
Onto my alternate method.
Almost any block can be appliqued, Let me show you how!.
- Trace the larger units the exact size
- Trace the smaller units WIDER like the one above for the 2 sides.

I cut 2 circles
- One is the swan fabric
- The other is a SOLID WHITE that will block the dots so they don't show through the swans
Fold & Press your background to mark the center in both directions
- Center white circle.
- Center the swans on top
- take 4 small units and place on your fold marks
- Work in quadrants putting 2 more small and 3 large units between
Keep reading for tips on blades postions
The small stripe blades are wider than the pattern so that I can place the large aqua shapes over them.
This way when I blanket stitch the shapes I only have to stitch the tops of the small blades as the large ones cover the edges
Work in sections as fuse as you go!

- 50wt Aurifil thread, there are some great SALE packets!
