Beach Baby with the Button Club & my Free Pattern!

I am THRILLED to be designing a mini quilt each month to showcase year 2 of the Button Lover's Club! 

Each month the buttons are a collection by color and theme. I'm posting the pattern prior to the buttons arriving from the club, that way you are ready to just stitch them down when they arrive! 

I love the beachy summer feel of the package for August.... so I HAD to do a sand pail! I have great memories of going to the beach each summer with a brand new sand pail. 

This month I'm giving you a little tutorial.. that way you can do my banner quick & easy! Ready?

"Beach Baby" is fast & fun! (download my pattern at the end), mine is made with this jolly bar of fabric designed by my friend Sandy of American Jane. Any of her fabrics will be perfect! (jolly bar i used and  all Sandy's fabric)

oh.. did I tell you each month will be a banner??

Auditioning my fabric I folded it into the approximate shape... looks good!

The jolly bar is JUST wide enough for the sand pail applique. this is how I positioned it. 

I'm using my favorite  scissors  for the applique, you really need a pair!

More tips in my Learn to Applique book. 

I am blanket stitching around all the shapes with it layered.

That way I'm appliqueing the shape and quilting and outline at the same time.

This is what the back looks like. You are seeing the sand pail and ribbon accent appliqued & quilted in this photo

I like to do this for wall hangings & table runner where the back is really not meant to be seen. 

All the quilting is done with straight stitches.. even that wave! I just gently turn the quilt side to side as it goes forward. I should do a video on that for you.. would you like that?

I SERIOUSLY need a trip to the beach to photograph this. Maybe in a little cottage.. with a picket fence over flowing with beach roses and a short walk to the ocean... right? I must talk to the shipping department about this!

I love creative people who jump in and do something new and fresh with things that have been around awhile. Add to that mix enthusiasm, endless energy, and a huge smile and you have Mathew Boudreaux, better known as Mr. Domestic. Since I’ve known Mathew I think I look at things a little differently. He has always been creative and we are lucky he now is hooked on quilting. I’m going to find out a bit about fabric weaving and English Paper Piecing today.. see.. lots of ideas!

Aurifil BOM Challenge, Block 7 by Shruti- Enter your block!

My Favorite day of the month is Aurifil Designer Challenge day! Our theme this year is the rainbow of colors found in the color wheel. Each designer is assigned a color going around the wheel and July is Shruti Dandekar who lives in India. 

Shruti's color is ...true Orange and you will love hearing why at my interview with her. I absolutely adore her block design, it's so interesting and fun to make!

She did hand applique for her block, I am doing fusible with Heat n Bond Lite. I'm doing full fusible as it's easier to control since I have to cut out the inside pieces and then the sections are not that wide. 

Shruti's pattern diagram is excellent. I trace 1/4 then make a horizontal mark where I'll match up the next 1/4. Take your time, it's easy to do!

I lay the fusible on the wrong side of the applique fabric and press without steam

Next i cut the outline one section at a time.

• I cut on the line from the dot to the center.
• Then cut on the line back up the other side. I use my Havel scissors for that
• Now I trim the center section away. I like to do that with the smaller scissors
• Move to the next section until you are done!

I Really wanted this amazing red fabric to 'be the one'.. first love kind of one...

But I would need the applique to be much lighter. So plan B

Yes!! It's really perfect. Has the blue I want to add in, and a cute little flower to center!

Do you like it? 

You might want to applique your block with it a little over sized, then trim.

Use the lines on grid on your 12.5" ruler (which every quilter should own) to line up.

I add that gold from the "Madame Rouge".. it's such a great companion to Pondicherry. .
