I think is my year of learning new things! It might be spurred on by the wonderful design team I'm working with for The Splendid Sampler™ project... but whatever happened, I'm trying all kinds of things! Let's take a look at this one, which I can say I'm pretty darn excited about!
This is the new Aurifil 80wt thread. It's much finer than 50wt, which is the 'go to' wt that I use for piecing, machine applique, my hand applique, and machine quilting.
I've been waiting since I first heard about it to share!! I did product testing for them and it's DIVINE!
Let me tell you a bit more about it
Being thinner it means it's wonderful for hand applique as the thread will just disappear into the fabric beautifully. I hand appliqued my 'Top of the Hill' Splendid sampler block ..
here is a close up.
I am seriously considering doing a scrappy quilt of these blocks as a take along project!
The other way I tried it is for straight stitch machine fusible applique. This is a raw edge technique. With the Splendid Sampler being 6" blocks there often small pieces that I'd rather not blanket stitch.
For the Flip Flops, I decided to do the entire block as straight stitch right along the edge. Most of the block is done with 50wt, but I did the flower with 80wt. Let's take a closer look...
For this test I kept the stitch length the same for both the 50wt and 80wt.
The flower is fussy cut so it's got a lot of curves. Next time I will change the stitch length to be shorter. My Babylock Crescendo is so easy to use I can quickly change to something smaller for just that shape.
I REALLY love how it blends in nicely and is not a feature.
I plan to use it on my Summerfield kit.. you know that guilty indulgence project I recently added to my life.. that one... hello beautiful... isn't it gorgeous!
I've been looking at it to decide WHICH block to do first.. and I think I've decided on the Sunflowers as it's just the most amazing block! This quilt is a reproduction/variation of one in the Virginia Quilt Museum.
There are still a few die cut kits left if you want to sew with me! it's a peel and fuse project to create an incredible quilt..
But I digress! Back to the thread....
There will be 88 colors of 80wt Aurifil. They come on the adorable spools and work perfectly on your sewing machine.
Right now you can get these exclusive kits and be the first to try 80wt!! I love the names of each.. fun fun!
