The Splendid Sampler™ Block 15 is by the amazing and talented Janice Ryan of Better of Thread, she always makes incredible quilts and her block is quite spectacular! My heart skipped a few beats when I saw it and I wanted to stitch right away!
We are doing our first paper pieced block. I took a lot of time with my fabric placement. I had seen several incredible blocks at the quilt show on our site (here for block 15) and decided that I wanted a strong red on the long skinny portion. The rest would be aqua and lights. Plus some scraps of my bobbins and bits with a yummy stripe.
Measuring each unit before sewing is key, and be sure to check the 1" mark when you printed so the templates are the correct size.
After being sure I like it, I carefully pick up and align each section to sew the units into my 'Family Affair'.
I am thrilled with my block!! it's so great when you work out colors and they do what you want.
Each block has a story or a reason the designer created it. We asked them all to create a block based on some thoughts about sewing. Janet's is about her family and learning to sew from her mom.
If you have been to one of my talks or my workshops, you'll know that I do not have anyone in my family that sewed. I might be unusual that my mom, grandmothers and Great grandmothers.. none of them.. sewed.
Since I interview so many people for my Podcast, and I teach so many people every year, I know that I'm kind of the odd person out, which is ok. I learned to sew in highschool Home Ec and it changed my life. I can't thank that school system enough for having given me this gift. My family are all of you who sew with me.. I heart you all!
