I have wanted to make a free Star Cakes quilt ever since I saw the video from the Fat Quarter shop! I love the layout, love the idea of layer cakes.. love love love! When they asked me to join them in celebrating their 'Top 10 Videos of 2015' I said heck yes, give me the Star Cakes!! Warning.. the following photos may be addictive, I'm not responsible for the quilting mayhem that may ensue in your studio as you try to make this as fast as you can.
Disclaimer ... On this video tour so far you've seen finished pillows, finished wall hangings, finished lap quilts, and I'm SURE someone made a finished California king from their favorite video.
Here.. not so much
I'm all about the process... the creation.. picking just the right fabric for the corner stone and not compromising to finish.
That's my story.. shall we begin?
You do make a lot of triangles which ARE my favorite thing (My Triangle book.. why yes!). I used fat quarters and yardage to make my quilt, so you can use my fast triangle methods form the book.
Here are some of mine in progress....oh so yummy!
My quilt was inspired by the Heather Ross Ballerina fabric. I fell hard for this, first puppy love kind of hard.
As a little girl I took ballet lessons, with black tight, and pointy shoes.
.... I stunk at it.
I did not like to practice and it was tiring to hold your arm out... all.. that... time... at the balance bar.
But I LOVE the tutus!!!
To the ballarina fabric I added in extra Hello Darling that i had left from another project.. pink.. orange... so divine!
The Most divine piece? The Strawberries!! I want to roll around in this fabric it's so cute!.. but I digress
For sashing I found the yummy orange creme stripe... PERFECT
But what about corner stones? Let's take a look
- Black like the leotard? mmmm.. a little too harsh.. all I SEE is the black square
- How about Hot PINK with black dots? mmmmmmmmmmm... not quite right
- What if I cut a square with a red dot IN THE CENTER ,,,, I like it.. I like it a lot
This is what I have so far!! I have loads more squares and I want this bigger.. I may even order more fabric for a ballerina backing...
And I know a little girl.. about 6 yrs old.. that might like this...
I put the video next so you can watch it and get started! Below the video are the links to the different things and the list of other designers to visit today to see what THEY did with Star Cakes! (see the other videos featured HERE)
