I love everything Valori Wells does, her designs, her fabric, her photography. When she joined us for 2015 as an Aurifil Designer I was thrilled to be able to interview her for Aurifil. She has a mini quilt for us that uses up those precious bits you have, the ones you can't part with... or you can cut into your favorites like she did! I loved hearing how she designed it. First I decided I would use my Moda fabric line strips for this. I've got this great basket I bought to remind me of my trip to South Africa, and it's perfect in my studio on the floor where I can drop in strips.

First thing was to grab a handful of strips. When you read Valori's process you'll see she kept the colors very tight. I have a few more colors I"m working with to use in my collage of mini's!
I'm keeping the project in this box, so I got it all out to look again at the colors and think about layout.
Her project is primarily a log cabin variation. I simplified mine so you can see the difference between her project and mine. Valori's has a lot more detail.
She explains that to get that detail, she inserts and uses little pieces. So this is how you do that. The key is after #2 you need to trim that strip straight so it's now bowed like the photo.
Here is my mini! I stopped when it 'felt right'. It's one of the smaller ones as I need some smaller pieces to fill int.

Each time i put them all up on the wall it becomes more and more exciting!
I'm not sure yet how I'll set them, they may get sashed, or I might do made fabric... I don't know yet.
