I am very excited to be working with Craftsy to review the quilt classes for you! I have a SUPER FUN set of classes to reveiw for August.. ALL by instructors whose first name starts with an 'A'!! And I nuts? Nope... because I secured a limited time discount for you on EACH ONE!
I'm so passionate about learning and teaching. I have taken many classes at Craftsy since and I've interviewed many of their instructors.
Let's get to it!
Amanda Jean Nyberg has been known as 'Crazy Mom Quilts' on the internet and she is prolific and generous with her quilt time. I've followed her quilt journey for so long I can't remember NOT knowing Amanda Jean.
One of the cool things Amanda is know for is scrap quilting. In her class she takes you through 10 different techniques to make this row by row quilt, AND has loads of fabric picking chatter for you.
You are going to have so much fun when you take this class!
Here is part of the class roster. Her section on selecting fabric is really good. It lets you walk through her process and she has some great tips on using a focus fabric to build your collection for the project.
- Each section of the class is for one to three of the rows.
- I like this formula for this class because it's set up to teach you a new tip, trick, block or technique for each row of the quilt!
- PLUS Amanda has the blocks made into full quilts for many of the rows, it's a wonderful way to see how it actually looks.
As with all Craftsy classes, if you want to skip a section, just click to the topic you want and the video goes right to it. I think this is the best feature!
This is also a closed captioned class, so there is text you can read.
One section I really like in Amanda's class is this one where she walks you through this block using two different methods.
The first is fusible applique where she walks you through her favorite way step by step. This is a great learning section if you are new to applique.
And the second is doing the block by hand. This is a really wonderful handwork project and she tells you an adorable little story about why she calls this orange peel block the 'Apple Cake' block. I think doing this block by hand is MY favorite way because it's so portable. You can create a stack of these units and she has a beautiful full quilt she shows you using this block, all appliqued by hand.
For those of you really want to master flying Geese units, Amanda shows you several ways of doing them. And I'm head over heels for her 'all flying geese' quilt behind her! WOW!! (and I spy some Aurifil thread.. she has excellent taste)
This sections ends with a lesson on how to create a 'random' layout of fabrics/blocks for a scrappy look. So many people have trouble with random, and Amanda Jean's method is very easy to follow, you will LOVE it!
at Craftsy you can ask the instructor a question or leave a comment.. here is what someone said
- Q- I love that you show what to do if there is a little cutting error. So many beginners would just keep going after that and wouldn't get straight measurements. It helps to show that even seasoned quilters need to adjust and adjusting can often make things come out better!
This is a super section!
Have you wondered about fussy cutting? what does it mean, how do you use it in scrap quilts? She takes you through her process with several examples.
I want to share this Student Question
- Quilter Could you please let me know what model Juki machine you are using? I have always wanted to buy one. Absolutely LOVING your class. I too am crazy crazy about scraps!!! Congratulations again Amanda on your class. Well done xxx Monica from Australia
- Amanda - In my class I am using a friend's Juki TL-2010. At home I sew on the older version of the same machine...a Juki TL-98Q. Both are fantastic machines! I can't recommend them enough!
I know you are going to enjoy this and I'm excited to be sharing it with you. Once you have registered, sign up for the class and it's yours forever. Watch it over and over.. and yes.. over again!
