Sometimes a project calls my name, and it might be doing that for years. I buy the fabric, I have the pattern, I might even get it out and look at the project over the years, but it doesn't get made.
Even when it's really easy, really fun, and I KNOW it's going to make me happy to work on it.
So the other day I pulled out the fabrics and patterns for...
This gigantic flag quilt! The fabrics are from Jane Sassaman from quite a few years ago. That gingham plaid is HUGE.. the sashing is 4" wide, border is 6". Go ahead and look at your ruler, image a PLAID with 2" squares.. yep.. BIG!
It was easy and super fun.
Since the gingham plaid is so big, Jane's directions have you iron under that big blue dot rectangle and top stitch it to the plaid before you sew the sashing..
It's BRILLIANT! And she has a free pattern for it here, because I'm sure you can get another big buffalo plaid to try it with, or wide stripes?
I have enough to make a single flag too.. well actually I have more than enough but that's another story!
As sometimes happens when I make a project, it was the MAKING that I wanted to do. All my life I've been able to make something and then feel no need to own it. Which is a useful thing to have when you are in the business of making!
And sometimes I get to a stage of the project and I'm done. I got it out of my system and the part I wanted to do is complete, I'm happy. But the project is not finished.
Well that means it's YOUR lucky day! I had so much fun but decided that someone else should own this top to quilt it and enjoy it.. what to do you think? Am I crazy? Or would you love a chance to win it?

'I have had a lot of memorable Fourth of July celebrations. My favorite ones were when my husband was in the Oregon Air National Guard. When they worked on the 4th, their families were allowed to come out to the base and have a picnic dinner. There was usually something grilled like burgers and hot dogs. When it got dark we were allowed to go to the end of one of the runways and watch the Fort Vancouver fireworks. My husband and his colleagues were off duty by that time so they got to enjoy the fireworks too. Fort Vancouver has the biggest display west of the Mississippi. Anyway,the base is next to the Columbia river which divides Oregon and Washington. The fireworks are launched from a barge in the river. It is an amazing sight. We were never disappointed. After 9/11 this was not allowed again because of increased security on all military and government installations.
