I can not TELL you how excited I am that my wonderful good friend Jane Davidson (QuiltJane) has written her first self published book and it's SO amazing! Jane is Australian and she invited a group of her fellow Australian designers to contribute to the book. I asked Jane to tell me about the book and the making of it... AND at the end.. you have a chance to win a copy!!
I have TWO books to give away. If you have already bought it and you win, I'll send you one of MY books instead!
So Please order her book first, then enter.. you win either way!
What is the story/theme of your book?
--I find most Australian quilters are inherently eclectic in their style of quilting. They are not afraid to use bold colours and patterns in their designs. Maybe it is a reflection of the beauty that surrounds them and the diversity in our landscape and culture that inspires them to create such beautiful and unique quilts.
Desert to Sea is a compilation of 8 designers and 10 quilts reflective of the land from desert and sea.
Photo - Molly an Australian Shepherd, was our prize model. After rolling around in the sand she decided to nestle up against the quilt.
It's exciting to see so many Australian quilt designers in one book, are these your personal friends, or people that you wanted to work with?
--I knew Betty and Lorena personally and loved their styles. I approached Danielle, Cathy, Jeannette, Rachaeldaisy and Charlotte after following their work on Instagram and their blogs.
Each designer has a unique style and a favourite technique that is common in their work. The most important factor in choosing the designer was that they were not afraid to use colour.
Top photo = Lorena Uriarte quilt, Opal Essence. Taken up north at one of the beaches near Mooloolaba... ok.. i confess.. i love the name Mooloolaba... say that outloud.. fun!
Bottom photo-- What better model for a Melbourne Cup themed quilt than an ex racehorse. This lovely filly is retired and living in Cairns
When you were doing the photo shoots for the book, did anything crazy happen?
--The designers photographed their quilts locally and then sent the quilts to me for extra shots. I flew down to Sydney one weekend and three of my sisters and Lorena travelled to Boat Harbour to photograph a few of the quilts.
The weather turned sour and the gale force winds, sea spray and un cooperative canine models turned our shoot in to a crazy chaotic morning.
Regardless, we had so much fun trying to hold down quilts while aiming for the perfect shot. One could say it was a bad hair day.
Don't they look like they had a hard workout at the photo shoot!
