Day 6 of my 12 days of giveaways and a Craftsy class is my prize! Today I have a review and giveaway of a class by my friend and awesome freemotion quilt expert Leah Day. ALWAYS the #1 thing is that you want to do better, is quilt your own quilt! Leah had joined me on my radio show each month in 2013, and we learned a lot. Her classes are awesome
Let's get to it!
If you have ever seen Leah teach freemotion quilting, then you know she has a passion for sharing. Sharing that YOU CAN quilt your own quilts, without a long arm, on your own machine. This class review is of her Free Motion Fillers Vol 1

This is a freemotion quilting class. Leah breaks down the topics into very nice size chunks to learn from. And the class is a sampler of techniques. Let me a few of the outline topics with you.
- lesson 1 machine set up and more - She takes you through looking at how to set up the machine, even down to the foot pedal use! This part i found fascinating. And she already dives into how to resolve problems like thread breaking.
- Ugly Stitches - ok.. this made me laugh, but really, we get them and often don't know how to fix them. Leah is very good at explaining this.
- Lessons 3, 4 and 5 - The meat of the class taking you through creating freemotion patterns. you are going to love the different designs you can do.
- Mastering Echo Designs - She explains what they are and how to think about them.
- Bonus section -backing, starching, and batting.. let's go!
If you have only taken more recent Craftsy classes, you'll see the format is a little different.
I think this class is worth every penny just for the trouble-shooting tips Leah has. She has a lot of experience looking at freemotion quilting and helping people adjust to fix for issues.
I personally quilt on a domestic machine and think her trouble-shooting tips are super helpful!
Leah approaches the class as a stitch sampler. You can see one of the versions on the wall on the right, pretty! She created this quilt so you can use each square for a different stitch. Working this way really builds up your 'mind/memory' motion, which is critical for learning Freemotion quilting.
You have to do it to get better!
There is a pattern for this quilt and she shows where she stitched each design.
Learning how to handle bulk, is also a critical ingredient to successful AND FUN freemotion quilting.
From your hand positions, to how to get that huge quilt in the little hole of your machine, she covers it all. Here Leah shows you how to position your hands on the design to create a frame you stitch in.
The last section goes over getting the entire sandwich together. Since you start the class with small pieces, that is why it's at the end. But if you are a bit more advanced, you can do this lesson first to learn some great tips. Like Leah uses regular pins instead of safety pins to baste. She does cover the tips, and shows you how.
