Pat Sloan: December Aurifil Block

For the last six years, December has had the added excitement of the last block for the Aurifil Designer of the Month program revealed! Each year I am wowed and thrilled by the talent of the quilt designers that work with Aurifil thread. And I am delighted and made to think about the stories they share with me when I interview them.  It is such an exciting day to share with you the 12th block for 2014!

Carrie Nelson is our 12th Designer of the year, our December blocks is amazing and add so much to the entire quilt! GREAT JOB Carrie!

Take a look below at what I did for my version, at the end is the direct link to my interview and the block pattern, as always, is at the end of the interview. 

I wanted to try to use a cream center like Carrie does on her block. So I laid it out and auditioned it before sewing.  Now let's try orange.

I ended up with orange. Do you agree? I think the block looked to washed out without some orange. 

Now there IS an inset seam in this quilt. Carries directions are very clear and make it easy, but I also did a photo tutorial below. 

Cut all your shapes per the pattern. CAREFULLY read the sizes.

The first thing I'm going to do is make the flying geese. 4 at a time.

Now I will follow Carrie's pattern and sew the center square to the first row.

See the pin? That is how far I'll sew LEFT to the PIN.  I will also BACK STITCH to secure the seam. 

Add the next two sections.

Now you are ready for that inset seam, which is not hard.. I promise!

Hold back the top unit, and sew the 4th geese unit to the square.

Now place the TOP geese unit, right sides together with the block

I sew from the INSIDE to the outside as you can see in the bottom right photos. it works out great!

• NOW hit DONE

• The photo was loaded to my site!
• Select the TAKE ME BACK 

• And THAT's how easy it is!!  
• on my right side bar is a CATEGORY called 'Quilts by You' that you can select at ANY TIME to see these Quilt Show posts!

I might have even made some... in my spare time.. wink!  Joanna love flip and sew techniques so you will be learning a ton of tricks for that in this workshop.

Mimi Dietrich’s Hand Applique Made Easy class shares applique in three ways.Traditional needleturn that I do when I do hand work, a second way to needleturn, and back basting. She is an expert at these techniques so you will learn a TON and you can watch her over and over again!

A Better Cook in 10 Dishes with Martha Holmberg is a tool-building class. I love learning some of the great basics she provides. And her style is very easy and straight-forward. I won't make all these things, just like I won't make every style of quilt. But I like having that knowledge and my favorite item to learn about was the basics on meat selection and seasoning. 

The one thing I really want to master is Pies.  I won't eat any ole pie, I want an extraordinary pie.  Flaky crust, beautiful fillings and totally worth all the calories! I am excited to be learning the secrets is tasty pie making in this class with Baker Nancie McDermott!

I saved my favorite for last, SOUP! I am crazy about making soup. Author Domenica Marchetti shares so much great knowledge about creating rich soups. The most exciting thing I learned, besides how to make AWESOME broths.. is how to properly use bread for thickener. It is a cool trick and she explains exactly why and how this works. 

There are many other cooking classes that you will want to look at.. I am going to try them all eventually!
