Pat Sloan: Featured Friend Nancy Mahoney

Nancy Mahoney and I have been friends a long time. She is a brilliant designer, an author, fabric designer and super knowledgeable about quilting. If you need to figure out HOW to do something, Nancy can show you! I invited Nancy to be my featured guest all this year at my Radio show. Picking ONE favorite out of the hundreds of quilts I've made is like picking a favorite grandchild. Each quilt is special. However, Pat asked me to pick just ONE quilt, so after mulling it over … which one should I pick ... I chose this quilt named Dot to Dot as my favorite for several reasons.

To start, I love creating quilts with circles, rings, and dots! I've made several different versions of this quilt and it looks equally fantastic in any fabric/color combination. I like that the layout in this version is a visual puzzle, but you can rotate the blocks to create a completely different look. And, I love teaching how to make this quilt (my next Dot to Dot class is at the Bluegrass Quilt Festival, Sept. 25-27 in Shepherdsville, KY).

Pat Sloan: My Featured Friend Carolyn Friedlander

I have asked a group of my very talented friends to share with me their 'current' favorite quilt in my 'Featured Friend' series of articles!  As soon as I saw Carolyn's quilts I was intrigued and needed to see more. She put a lot of thought into her quilts and her fabric designs and I find that very inspirational. Hi Pat!

The truth is that I do not really have a favorite quilt, because all of my quilts are special to me for different reasons. I chose this particular quilt--Stripes (link here)--because it was one of the patterns that I created with the launch of my first fabric line, Architextures. It had always been a dream to design fabric, and so the first time sewing with it was a completely surreal experience! It was beyond crazy to see my name on a selvage and to see my drawings on the fabric that I was running under the needle. 

 

With all of my projects, I am curious to explore something, and with this particular quilt, it was a special interest in color that got me thinking. I was interested in creating a two-way color gradation, and so I spent quite a bit of time organizing my fabrics and colors so that they would be changing in a certain way. After getting the fabrics all stacked up and ready to go, I worked through the pile, anxiously awaiting the next color to pop up. I was eager to get all of the blocks completed and see if the design worked out as a whole the way that I'd envisioned it in my mind. 

 

When I think about this project, that's what I think of--working with my fabric for the first time and being crazy curious about how my crazy color scheme would play out in real life.
