I am have thinking about fabric selection lately. With so many awesome Globetrotting and Aurifl blocks being shared HERE.. I am fascinated .. and truly EXCITED to see the fabric combinations used.
I have been thinking about which fabrics to use for my Sugar Blocks with Amy Gibson. I want to use something exciting an FUN this year. (are you signed up? CLICK HERE)
As I went searching I found this pile I'd saved of Cosmo Cricket fabric.. ohhhh la la.. I may have found it! Camera's, trailers, marshmallows and chocolate bars... yep... playful AND FUN!
When you are doing a sampler it gives you a great place to experiment with a fabric collection. You have different blocks with different units. And if you are doing a mystery it adds in another element. That element is surpise. You pick a group of fabric but since you don't know what the blocks are.. it's hard to know what will work.
Let me give you a few tips. Not only have I participated in many of these sew alongs, I've also written and hosted them like the current Globetrotting and Aurifil BOMs.
Let's look at this selection I have. There are many novelty prints, stripes, dots and a charm pack.
I wanted a grounding fabric, that is where my Gold Bella Solid comes in. I'll use this solid to hold together the other fun and quirky fabrics.
Another thing I will do is repeat something significant in MANY of the blocks. By significant I mean a print that you NOTICE. Like a stripe, the spiky, the dots.. the fish.. these are ALL significant.
When I designer showcases a significant print in their pile, take note! If they don't, then get one yourself as it will REALLY make your quilt amazing.
Do you love these owls?? OH MY they make my heart beat fast.. how adorable!
Another funky thing is the stripe fabric. I was a girl scout and have such great memories of campfires and making s'mores!! That is what clinched this line for me. I want to show off the fun things.
Block 1 of the Sugar Block came and I saw a perfect place to show off the adorable marshmallows and chocolate bars.
But it means a strange fussy cut. An on angle. And I went for it!!
What do you think.. ADORABLE right?
The other thing is to audition, audition, audition.. then audition AGAIN! I would prefer to layout the block fabrics before cutting it all. Like this.
But that green was a bit dull
I wanted something SO MUCH MORE .. mmm.. CUTE!
Like Polka dots!
Was the rust too dull? too dark?
let's try another... mmmm.....
Found another polka dot!
This wasn't it but I did keep it in my pile for later.. I bet it finds it way into the final quilt.
Ta Da! Here it is!
