I am honored to again be the host of Aurifil's FREE block of the month! Each month I'll interview the designer and I'll make my version of the block. Theme for this year's block is a woman that inspired the designer. I'm looking forward to learning about all the women in these designer's lives.
Our January Designer Brigitte Heitland is from Germany and her company name is Zen Chic.
I've decided to use the grey fabrics in my Bobbin's and Bits line along with some green and orange
Brigette used the 'Flip and Sew' method, which I LOVE.
I have THREE tips to help you with flip and sew blocks.
TIP ONE - If you are sewing a square to a rectangle, sew from the INSIDE to the OUTSIDE.
This will elimate the 'point' sucking into your feed dogs.
TIP TWO - sew just a LITTLE BIT to the INSIDE of the line.
This gives you wiggle room when you flip the triangle over
TIP THREE - I read this tip somewhere a few years ago and it really makes a difference. I LEAVE the back rectangle intact.
If the flip is over the back rectangle, like this one, I'll trim it even.
Leaving the back rectangle gives your block stability and I find my units are much more accurate. The down side is that it adds bulk when sewing intersections. So depending on the project you may not want to do this. Make a test block to see what you think.
