When my bestie Michele of Quilting Gallery asked if I'd like a copy of her pattern 'Delightful Stars' I said yes! Who doesn't love a spectacular star quilt? And guess what?? Michele is offering TWO copies to giveaway to TWO of MY lucky readers.. YEAH YOU!
Read on... and you have to read the WHOLE THING so you know how to enter.
Michele's pattern is really a BOOK of teaching blocks. She has included tons of information about accurate piecing, and the quilt is awesome! (CLICK HERE to see her page about the pattern)
My Fabric 101 posts are all about how I look at fabric selecting.
So when I make a quilt there are several ways I approach the fabric selection and the very first is what is the purpose of the quilt
- Is it for someone (not you)? Is it a person, a fundraiser, an unknown but not you? Then what do THEY like? What is the purpose of the event, what colors might work best?
- Is it to showcase certain fabrics, like my own fabric lines? Or someone elses fabric lines. of course this happens more for me than you.. but you might want to use a particular LINE of fabric, so your process will be similar to mine. In this case the fabric is pre-selected by being the LINE you want to work with.
- Are you making this quilt to use some fabric you already own and want to play with? THAT is the case of the quilt I'm making this time. I have 6 options to show you.
- Or maybe you want to make the DESIGN and now you have to find fabric that works for the pattern. All small pieces? Than that HUGE typewriter print is not the best choice. Does your quilt design have BIG blocks, then find some larger prints to showcase them.
At some point I collected the group of fabrics above to work with the typewriter print. I echoed the pinky/salmon color, the turquoise, then I added in that zinger lime!
In the case of my option 2, I have these prints from an Alice in Wonderland collection from a few years ago. Alice in Wonderland is MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME.. seriously ALL TIME. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
have you read it? how many times? Since I do have one very large print in this collection.. it might not be a good option for this quilt.
Did you learn to read with Dick and Jane books? I am hoarding.. saving this collection to use someday. The charm pack is a great option for a quilt like this to sprinkle the fabric all around.
A few years ago I spotted this Circus fabric and grabbed it... mine mine mine! oh... I digress.. back to the fabric... I LOVE the tents.. love love love them! And the words.. and the big print.
This collection needs a LOT of friends to work in the quilt. Just like the typewriter print
When visiting New York City, we went to the City Quilter shop. My husband (The Shipping Department) loved the subway system (do you know they have an app for your phone.. of course they do!). When he saw the subway print he really liked it, so I bought it and several other NYC prints.
Another set of fabrics I've had awhile, my Paris Eiffle Tower. I've been to Paris several times, and would love to take my husband.. doesn't it sound romantic? The map is from a moda line, the building prints were given to me by a student.
Obvously the tower is BIG but if I used it for a border, then I could add some into blocks all across the quilt. Once again, this set of fabrics needs more friends, but I can see doing the quilt very soft and tonal.
