One huge benefit of going through those baskets in my studio was finding a few goodies I'd forgotten about. I unearthed this glorious treasure, a vintage sugar sack.
A few months ago ... ok let's be real... the postage stamp says a YEAR AGO... YIKES!!!! I was emailing/twittering/facebooking with Marydon of Blushing Rose Boutique.
We we chatting about feedsacks.. how we got on to this subject I have no clue, but you know quilters.. one topic leads to another and we ended up talking vintage feedsacks. I suspect Marydon ALWAYS ends up here as she sells them (check this page out!)
I remember saying that I'd really love to build a quilt around a vintage feed sack. But not just ANY feedsack (I do own a few).. no I want one that says SUGAR. Why? I think I saw a quilt with a sugar sack in it one time and I always have it in my head to use the full sugar sack and build the quilt around it. Maybe improvisational, maybe as a medallion... maybe a story quilt.
Well the marvelous Marydon announced she was sure she had a Sugar Sack and low and behold.. it came in the mail!!
It is so soft.. very muted. So I think maybe a low volume quilt (low contrast colors) built around it. Using creams and very faded blues. Maybe I'll have to bleach some fabric to make it look soft and old. I used to bleach a lot of fabric so it might be fun to do that again!
What to you think? Do you own any feedsacks? Used them in a quilt?
I have a lecture today in Maryland for the NeedleChasers of Chevy Chase.. will I see you? (photo above is the quilt guild in Eureka CA)
