Recently I have had the amazing opportunity to meet a lot of new people. Not in person, but here online. And when I say a lot, I mean thousands, and not 5,000 or 10,000 ...but over 25,000 new people in the last few months. These are New people I've never meet before.
Many of you have joined my "Quilt with Pat Sloan" group at Facebook and many of you are new sign-ups for my email newsletter.
Some of you didn't know me, but you found my quilt group via a search, a friend, or a suggestion. You looked around (it's open to the public to read without joining).. you thought my group looked like fun and friendly quilters and you hit the 'Join' button.
And Viola!.. we became new best friends!
So what usually happens when you meet someone new?
You say hello.
You tell them a bit about yourself, they tell you a bit about themselves. If you are a quilters, then you show them photos of your quilts on your phone, and take your latest project out of your bag and share what you are working on.
And quilters make friends very quickly because we speak the same language.
I thought I'd share a few things about myself you may not know. And then you can share a something with me about yourself in the comments.
We'll be great friends!
10 things you might not know about me
1- Since we are quilters, color is very important to us. My first favorite color in the whole wide world was yellow. Any shade of yellow is great now, but when I was little... screaming crayon box 'Sunshine Yellow' was the best shade of all. My upstairs hallway is painted just that very shade, yes.. it really is.
2- If you follow me at Instagram and FB I am forever taking photos of flowers. I bought my first plants in the Grand Place in Brussels Belgium. They were Begonias and tomato plants. I created a little garden in our backyard. I was about 14 years old.
3- Many of you know I have a degree in Computer Science. I'm a geek. I've been on computers since I was 16 when someone had the bright idea to install a monster machine in the back of the Math class while I was in high school. I adore technology, innovation, and the internet (maybe not in that order). I adore my computer and big monitor! When I'm on travel the thing I miss most is my 'Big Girl' computer with it's big screen!
4- I can type VERY fast ...like.. VERY FAST. I can hold a conversation and answer a note at the same time... it's gift.. would you like it? No? I didn't think so.
5- When it comes to being athletic I did not get those 'genes'. I suck big time at all sports. Mostly I manage to avoid doing them with a variety of excuses. Since I went to a tiny High School (33 in my graduating class).. I did manage to become a cheerleader. Mostly because I'm not shy, had a big mouth, and wasn't afraid to be in charge... plus we got to go on the road trips! They also decided I should be Captain. (yes that's me wondering why everyone is just standing around)
6- On that note, you won't be surprised that I'm a first born and was in charge of just about everything.. whether I was invited to be or not. When I went out into the working world full time .. I ended up as the manager of teams of software engineers.. at one point I managed 40 people on 4 teams in my corporate life.
7- I've always been creative. But nobody else in my family makes things. Not my parents, or grandparents. I'm 'hard wired' to make things. My joy comes in the making, not in what will be done with the finished item. A reader's digest Christmas Tree is the first project I can remember making when I was very little. I progressed to shoebox dioramas and beaded jewelry in elementary school. Many crafts I taught myself. When I learned to quilt I knew I was going to make a LOT of quilts. So far I've made about 600 quilted projects and have no intention of stopping... ever....
8- I met my husband Gregg when I was 17 and on my way to college. His family lived across the street from my grandparents, and next door to my great-grandparents. His mom worked with my grandmother. We have been together a long time. Gregg is the 'behind the scenes' person at our company, fondly known as 'The Shipping Department.
9- Random facts: I knew since I was little I'd have my own business(I started planning for it right out of college), I love painted nails, I'm born organized (blessing or a curse?), When I am on vacation I do not want to make ANY decisions, I don't watch much TV, I love quotes, and my current hobby is learning to take better photos......
10- And lastly what you might not know is that my hand writing is unreadable. If you ever get a long note from me that is hand written I may have to send along a typed translation. My brain works much faster than I can write by hand... (thus #4 above). Usually you just see a few words hand written by me. I am green with envy of beautiful handwriting.
You can read some interviews I've given at my About Page There is an article on how I started my business.
