I've become a teeny tiny bit obsessed with Sew alongs since the beginning of they year! We are doing my free Globetrotting and the Aurifil Blocks... but those are in the beginning of the month. And what do we sew together for the rest of the month? I know we are busting UFOs.... but let's be serious.. we ALL love to start new things.. me included!
So I got to thinking.... we have scraps... we ALL have scraps. I'm cutting mine into 2", 2.5", 3.5" and 5". Plus 2.5" x WOF strips. That means my leftover layer cake (four 5" sq), my leftover charm pack squares, and my extra jelly roll strips are added to what I'm cutting from my smaller bits and pieces in my stash. I'm inspired by Joan Ford's method of cutting scraps and her thought that when the bins are FULL.. MAKE A QUILT! Check out her Scrap books at this link.
Looking around my studio I spotted a partial charm pack of my Bobbins and Bits and thought... what if each month I make up a small quilt. Maybe it becomes a bigger quilt, maybe not. But each month I take a new block and make scrap blocks.
And make it scrappy.. either VERY scrappy .. or controlled scrappy..
And make it EASY and FUN to piece
Are you in?
First select fabric - I will be working primarily with this fabric... White with black dots, a black with white polka dots.. and my Bobbins and Bits Charm pack
Looking around.. I spotted this French General charm pack, mini (2.5" sq) pack, and some left overs from a fat 1/8th bundle. Perfect to pair with a charm pack of Bella Solids (I still have a few bella solid charms left in my store at a super good price.. CLICK HERE to get some)
Then I went into my cut scraps to pick a controlled selection. This Aqua Bella Solid is my background. I pulled out the Red and pinks scraps in 5" squares and 2.5" squares.
Are you ready for the block?
Welcome to my ongoing Scrap Happy Sew Along... Meet block #1.. the Shoo Fly
My goal is to sew up scraps over the year into quilts to give. These will become lap size or larger quilts. Each month I'll have a new block and I'll share a few layouts we can use!
I ADORE the little snippet piles
that are left after squaring up blocks..
let me know what scraps you are going to use!
