I am in love with old canning jar.
The kind that are blue and have character. With maybe some dings... an old lid and loads of personality! My family did not can anything. I'm not sure I even knew WHAT a canning jar was until I went to college. I am not sure what happened but I heard about canning and fell in love with the jars. I even bought "Balls Book of Canning" and dreamed of canning for years.
I collected the cars
Read about the process
and that was as far as it went. I'm not sure I really WANT to can things, but the romance is there. I think I'll always be in love with the thought of canning.
My canning jar was the inspiration for Block 2 of Red Apple Lane. Just think of having a garden of goodies and creating a sparkling array of jars for your panty. The panty you can cook from all winter long (that would be about NOW if you live the norhern Hemisphere!)
"Jellie and Jams All Winter Long"
Block 2 of "Red Apple Lane"
I was so excited to draw this block and fit my jars on the window ... adding a bowl of cheeries and peaches for jam. Don't you envision a cozy kitchen with a red polka dot curtain? I know I do!

I was a child who learned to can foods when I was very young. Homemade was the folks motto...not my niece and sister in law have taken it up. I cut many a bushel of onions, cukes, and other ingredients to make bread and butter pickles....filled about 5 to 6 foam coolers at time. When mom got home from work, it was time to finish. Miss going to the farm....mom was one of 11 kids, dad 1 of 5, and I was raised an only child with an aunt and uncle who'd let me visit anytime I wanted.

I "can" buttons in my jars...have jars of all colors, some of just the mother-of-pearl buttons, some metallic buttons, some mixed color jars (pastels, red-white-blue)...I could spend hours going through my buttons.
We used to can...tomatoes, dill and bread and butter pickles, and relish, and salsa. Haven't canned in many years..do freezer pickles...only make small batches of salsa now...my garden grew smaller and smaller each year. Now I only grow cherry tomatoes...and shop at the farmers market for fresh vegetables each week.
I do have many of the older blue canning jars, as well as the clear ones...all sizes up to 1/2 gallon. Have several of the zinc lids too. I don't keep the jars full of buttons sealed tight as I have read they should be open to the air.

My grandmother canned everything! As a child, I loved seeing all the jars lined up on shelving in the basement where it was cooler. She used feed sacks tacked to the top shelf to hang down to cover the jars to keep out the light. With my last name, I love collecting canning jars with my name on them!

I like to can! I make strawberry & peach jams, apple butter too and I also can peaches. My carrot cake jam is really popular. You spread it over a block of cream cheese & spread it on crackers, yummy! I can't eat store bought jams anymore. I want to try pickles this year. It is a lot of work, but well worth it. Oh, I started blocks 1 & 2 this week!

My sister had a small farm and small [compared to her neighbors] garden. Frequently we would get a call that the beans were about to lose their snap, and up we'd go to can tomatoes, green beans, peaches and red beets [yum] it was fun and a lot of work. This past summer I found an urban farm near me, and I made peach butter. It was so good, but the peaches ran out b4 I could make a 2nd batch. Next summer I'll make more now that I know how easy it is and how awesome it tastes.

My Mom and Dad used to can, mostly tomatoes I think. I am totally like you, Pat, I love the jars and the idea of having my own cans of jam and jelly and stuff. So far haven't gotten any further than the idea of it all.
I do believe I will order the pattern for myself, we have the fabric..... it will be fun.

My Grandmother canned everything. One of my main memories of summers spent with her is the kitchen smelling of vinegar when she canned those yucky purple beets that mother loved to eat.
I have canned jam and would love to try canning tomatoes next summer.
I also promise to buy steam-a-seam today so I can start on block one.

I learned to can the summer after we bought our first house. My husband put in a garden (with directions from his Dad) and my MIL taught me how to can the beans and tomatoes that came in droves! My kids have grown up on home groww beans and refuse to eat store bought canned or frozen. A couple years we ran out before the new crop came in and there was he## to pay! Now we try to overplant to be sure to have enough. The girls have moved out now, but come back begging for a case at a time!

If you want to try canning make some jam. I can make a batch of jam in about an hour and a half and it's so yummy! You are welcome to take a short drive down 95 and I'll show you how.....and then we can dye some fabric together too.

I'm with you, Pat, love the idea, don't want to do the work.LOL I like using the jars for my button collection or to put pretty trims in them. That's my idea of canning :)

My family did lots of canning when I was a kid! My mom always made our jam, and my grandpa canned pickles, string beans and tomatoes. He also made mincemeat, tomato sauce and apple sauce. It was all fantastic!! Now my uncle cans pickles, string beans and beets!! Yummy!
