I live in the best part of the country.. really.. I just love it here! Not 10 minutes from my house is the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. This is where the Space Shuttle "Discovery" now lives. The Shipping Dept and I jumped in the car about 4:30 and took a little Jaunt over to see it! (click here to read about the museum)
The museum was pretty packed tonight. Between Christmas and New Year's they stay open until 6:30. And the parking is free after 4:00pm everyday. JUST incase you are around this time of year!
Doesn't our new space ship look fabulous?
Here she is up close.. those are the 'blanket' panels. This makes me think of a low contrast quilt. Each 'blanket' has weathered to unique colors.
Planes are on the ground and in the air. And you can walk that skywalk all around the top to look down on the planes, it's spectacular!
There is the shipping Department reading about that piece of plane sitting right in front of him. The concord is behind him. I LOVE the concord!! When I worked at Dulles Airport the concord flewn in right over our office building. Everything stopped and we'd run to the windows to look at it. It is such a beautiful plane.
This is the first time we've seen the restoration area that is now open to view! How cool is this.. when they are working you'll be able to watch.
My favorite 'new' thing besides the "Discovery" is this phone booth from the Kennedy Space Center! I'd love to make a call from it.
One more shot of our beautiful new space ship... I hope you'll come visit her one day.
Sharing the New Year's Eve sew along .. I'll be sewing on my "Secret Garden" again soon.. right after a shrimp snack.. yum yum!! Join me at...

Pat, after seeing your love of the space shuttle i may ask to pick your brain in 2013. My Dad worked at McDonnell Douglas and helped build the space shuttles. For each flight he received an embroidered patch with the names of all the crew sewn on it. I want to design a quilt with all of these patches and an appliqued space shuttle on it and also incorporate some pics that my dad had of him up on the shuttle working on it. What do you think??
