Hello my wild and crazy friends who are REALLY trying to still make stuff for themselves in December... I cherish your spirit... as I do the same!!!
case in point.. hosting this sew along for Red Apple Lane in December..
insert eye roll ...
Why not eh? BUT as I said in my newsletter.. many of you have a lot of other things going on so we'll be extending the chat of Block 1 into January....
now you can BREATH!
Today I have an INSIDER TIP for cutting multiple shapes.. like the apples!
let's get to it!
This insider Tip is really a TRICK. You know I love to cut away the fusible so it is just a 'basting rim' to work with. This makes my LARGE shapes nice and soft.
But sometimes shapes are small or there are a LOT Of them... like the apples and leaves in this block. And If you have been in my Little Blue Bird workshop.. it's those BERRIES (oi.. don't COUNT THEM... please... it's all a mental game.. wink!)
This tip/trick will create fully fused shapes. That means there is fusible on the entire back side, not just the rim like I normally do. For small shapes, projects I'm just using as a wall hanging, or when time is short.. I sometimes use this technique.
So where was I.. yes... the TRICK
First trace ONE shape.. here is the apple.. one large and one small.
LEAVE ROOM between them.. and... see the next photo...
And leave ENOUGH Heat n Bond Lite to accomodate ALL the shapes on the fabric you will be using.
That might mean doing a little rough measurement... go ahead.. see what you need.. don't be too frugal.
Now cut a strip of fusible.. or several strips.. enough to cut out the shapes.
Fuse this to the apple fabric.
subcut the fabric with the heat n bond lite fused on it. the subcuts need to be big enough for the shape.. a bit bigger is better. There will be a bit of waste with this method..but not a lot.
Stack the pieces with the drawn image on top.
I'm stacking 5 here, which is about as much as I want to do.
Cut all the shapes at once being careful not to slide the stack apart.
You could remove the paper on the 4 underneath, but then you REALLY need to be sure you are still over the fusible. I find it easier to tell that with the paper on.
There we go! The images are all the same direction on the apples. If you have a shape with some reversed, then you will need to draw a 'topper' with one in each direction.

the little bit of slide between the layers would help give the apples a varity of sizes..which is always nice..only a few threads different but makes a huge difference later on the quilt. Sew Peacefully

Great idea Pat. Thank you for reminding me - I have done that for years but have not been doing that much applique lately. I found my kit and will start on it for the NY Luau!

Thanks for the tip, Pat. I think I would pin the stack before cutting to help them not slide.
