Many people head to school today... it might be an exciting day... or not so much. It may be a first of many.. or the first of your last year .. (LOVE THAT thought!).
When I joined the Quilting Gallery blog hop last week I asked what was your favorite school memory.. and what an incredible list of stories I got!
I selected one winner... but I am also going to give you a few of the other stories left.. because they are just so good I don't want you to miss out! Read all the stories HERE
My Winner of my Jelly Roll is Leah who wrote
- "I remember who excited I was when it was my turn to take home the "magic Box" for the weekend in third grade. I was so excited!" Leah
I want to know what was in that Magic Box!!! This story reminded me that my favorite thing to take home from class was "Janice". Janice was one of the Class Hamsters in my 6th grade class in Weisbaden Germany. She was such a sweet hamster and at the end of the year my teacher wrote a note to my parents asking if I could keep her. I loved that Hamster!
A few of the Other GREAT stories
- "I remember the first day of Jr, High school .Our home room teacher was new young man. We girls did not know that he had just won a Gold Medal in the Summer Olympics and was famous. He even brought his Medal in later for all to see.He was a very nice man. He was engaged to our Home Economics teacher, which impressed the girls more." Nora B.
WOW... What medal did he win Nora? .. how exciting
- "My fondest school memory from an "age" ago is WALKING to and from school! No buses, no car pools, just all of us kids I. The neighborhood meeting on the corner and walking to school together. If we had a bit of change in our pockets on the way home we stopped at the bakery and got a nickel bag of cookies and then to the drug store for a coke if we were lucky to have another nickel or two! Those were the days. Love the new fabric line! Saw it on Studio K at's website and thought it was terrific ." Jean
I remember walking to school too. I'd waiti for one or two other kids and off we went~ I did that until 3rd grade when we move to a new house. I still love being able to walk to my stores!
- "My favorite memory of school was learning to crochet in 5th grade, Miss Hinds class. I made this really nifty vest, bright pink and purple. I wore it once a week for months. So proud of what I made. Wished I still had it!" Lisa J.
I loved my home ec where I learned to sew, learning to crochet would be have such fun!

Awesome!! I am super excited!! Thanks so much!!
The "magic box" was a medium sized black box that had secret drawers and all manner of items to help you become a magician: feathers, cards, flowers, balls, etc. The box itself and the extra props were used together so you could put on a magic show for all your friends and relatives. It turned you into a magician for the weekend.
Each week the teacher would randomly draw a name from all the kids who behaved that week and they would get a chance to take home the "Magic Box". I was always a good student, but was never lucky with the random drawing. I didn't get my turn for the box till almost the end of the year. So I had almost 8 months to build up the suspense and anticipation. I suppose that I why I still remember it to this day. :)

I enjoyed wearing regular clothes the first week of school. Most of the schools I attended were Catholic schools with ugly uniforms. It was always a fun day wearing regular clothes.

This morning I noticed all the first day of school posts and I remember as a child starting school on the day after labor day. Here is Alaska we start in late August and get out before Memorial Day. The other thing I remember is that today is my best friend from elementary schools birthday. I wonder where she is today, and what she is doing. We lost touch with each other in high school after many years and many letters due to moving around because our father's were in the Air Force. One too many moves I guess.
