Hoodie creates fabric that quilters crave.... and in my book that makers her an exciting person to know! I first meet Hoodie at the Red and White Exhibit, and we've become friends, which makes me so happy!
I am delighted to introduce you to "Hoodie's Land".. and I hope you are as hooked as I am by her whimsical fabrics.
How/why did you start quilting?
I started quilting when I was invited to the Simplicity quilt contest about three years ago.
My Cutie pie group fabrics were in my studio at the time, which I used to make a quilt.
It was an exciting experience for me as I had started to really enjoy quilting.
What
is your favorite quilt thing to do?
Making three-dimensional objects. Choosing different materials.
Why?
To challenge myself with creativeness.
What does your work area look like
--- Designing and workroom, which can also be called my computer room. This is where I spend most of time working on my two dimensional designs. My sewing machine (Janome) is sitting behind me. All my fabrics are stored on the shelf beside me.
I’m ready to sew at anytime.
---- Preparation room includes Ironing, cutting and sewing.
There is a Singer factory machine here as well. There are more fabrics and more tools.
--- Extra sewing room in the Basement. This is my secret space. I used to do my sewing projects there. I started making more sewing projects, so I moved my sewing machine to upstairs with my computer.
However, I still need the huge space when I make big projects.
There is Ping Pong table that helps for cutting and placing.
What is your favorite part of it..
The deep concentration that I go into, exactly how I feel when I play the piano.
What would you change?
I would change things to make more time for sewing!
What is the last piece of fabric you bought
Vintage / bark cloth fabrics.
If you could only pick one word, what would it be?
Sweet
What
was the best piece of advice you ever got, who was it from?
My first boss said to me when I was a mid twenty year old . “You are the best textile designer I know.”
I came back to Textile industry when I was 29. I had opportunity to work in a Japanese office of an American fabric company. I had also worked in there Los Angels studio for about a year.
However I needed to go back to Japan for many reasons.
I worked in Graphics and Textiles, both industries as a designer in Japan for 7 years.
I am working in the quilt industry as a textile designer after my final move to USA 1993.
My first boss who I had quoted earlier passed away last year.
It was very shocking News when I was visiting Japan last summer.
I will always keep his words in mind!
Keep making fabric designs!
Keep making more quilts.
What was the most interesting trip you have ever taken?
When I had made the choice to move to the USA in 1993 with only one suitcase.
Why?
I fell in love with NYC. ☺
What’s your motto/advice you live by?
Make it happen.
(ps... the photo is MY mouspad I got on Etsy made with Hoodie's fabric!)Snow or sun
Snow!!!!!!! I Whenever I see snow, it makes me happy. Maybe I was born in snowstorm? “Lets go to skiing!” is what I want to say when I see snow.
What are five things you can’t live without?
Challenges, Trust, Hope, support, and love
Dog or cat?
I live with a Dog, but I love to make cat designs!!!!
