For Summer Break, Michele and I decided the Learning Center needed a
Easy Peasy Summer Breezy Quilt A Long tutorial!!
Michele is in the lead this summer... she is writing all the tutorials.
I'm making blocks from my Fabric line that is NOT YET OUT.. but your SHOP CAN ORDER .. wink!!
Eat Your Fruits and Veggies from Moda (see it here top right)
I'm going to do mostly a blue and yellow quilt with my fabric line... there might be a bit of other colors popped in .. you'll have to wait and see.. wink!
In addition to showing off the block I'm going to give you a color/fabric selection lesson each week.. won't that be fun!!

Now for my color and fabric lesson!
These are 12" finished blocks. That means each piece of fabric used is rather big. The 9-patch is made with 4" finished squares.
I find that using one busy print and one calm print work best for me with large pieces of fabric in a traditional block
This combo above has 2 prints with multiple colors. I would use this combo if the whole quilt was 9patches since there would be variety. But for the sampler I prefer a more visually calmer block
Let's trade out the yellow.
This yellow is two tone... less colors in the fabric. That is why it is 'calmer' to me.
So let's trade out the blue for a tonal blue.
Same end result, a block that lets the 'fancy dancy' fabric be the star when it's partner is calmer and visually does not compete
What do you want to learn about color and fabric selection?
Tell me so I can address it in the weeks to come!

so in the block instructions it says to use black and white, you used the blue and yellow. Are one of these to be our background color?

I'm amazed when people can pick fabrics from so many different companies. I have quite a stash and don't know where to start to pick out fabrics. Any suggestions? Another thing what would be a good way to organize your fabrics? I have a lot of large pieces and then your usual fat quarters and I don't even know where to begin. Thanks!

Elizabeth, Re: charm packs, yes, you could use 5" charm packs if you wanted to for the first 12 blocks. Charms won't work for Block 13. I'd suggest having a consistent background fabric with them otherwise the designs created by the blocks will be lost. You'll need 2 charm packs of 40 charms, plus 1 yard of background.

Will a charm pack work for all the quilt blocks?

Sorry folks, with Pat travelling this week and me sleeping in a bit this morning, we didn't coordinate the timing of the first QAL post exactly. We'll do better next week!

I couldn't find a link to the block. Lots of other information there, but no block. Will they be posting them at a certain time during the day?
