The other night I had a sewing kit 'melt down'
My kits are NOT working... not not not!
Do you rememer last year when I sorted an built some new sewing kits?
- Home
- Work Travel
- Local Take away
- other (what WAS this one for?)
What IS a sewing kit anyway?
It is NOT a project kit.
The sewing kit is what you take WITH your project kit. It has stuff in it that is used 'across kits'.
Like
- Needle case
- Needles
- pins
- scissors
- thimble
- needle threader
The project kit and sewing kit go into another bag (yes they do!)
This then goes into some sort of container which goes WITH your project.
What is a project kit?
- Project
- Thread
- pattern
What would be in YOUR sewing kit? Your project kit?
come back this afternoon for more photos!

How can you live with just one sewing kit, I have several and keep one with each project. One is in a little basket, one in a cute little tin box with an old Singer Sewing machine on the front, and one is in a small round box that resembles a hat box. Each contain needles, thread, scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, pins, and any special item the project may need.

I use a sewing caddy-- It is a fabric basket with pockets in and out and a sturdy handle--I keep everything in it that can squeeze in....I have found no other way---if I don't have an item along to a class or retreat, I find that I need it---

My sewing kit usually has thread, needle threader, needles for hand and machine, thread heaven, scissors, pins, small post-a-notes, pencil and small note pad. Sometimes I have two or three of these set up so i can throw them into my project bags, I usually have several project bags going as well. I get bored easily so like a change of scenery.

I keep a small plastic box which travels with me whenever I have a class or retreat. It contains thread, thread snips, needles (machine & hand), scissors, seam ripper, purple thang, rotary cutter, pencil, small sticky notes and a couple safety pins. Rulers & pins are packed with the project. The box is small enough to fit with my sewing machine in the rolling carrier. I don't do much hand-sewing except bindings.

I will glad to see what you come up with. I have a kazillion duplicates of certain items so that I can have one for my applique kit, my hand sewing kit, my embroidery kit, etc. It seems like I was always missing something. So I tried a larger bag to keep everything together so I always had what I needed. By the time I hauled that around I didn't have enough room for my projects. Ugh! Hoping to get some useful ideas.

I have a little handmade one that I can keep the essentials in. I always try to use something clear to keep the project in (those really big Zip Lock bags work great for this), Then, I put everything into a tote (of which I have way too many!). But, I was thinking that I need to set up something to use when I am home. I always feel like I am scrambling looking for something, and wasting time in the process.

Remember the little sewing kits they gave you as a child? These never worked for me either. I have my chatelaine with thimbles (over and under), very sharp embroidery scissors on the ribbon, applique pins stuck in, applique and a quilting needles stuck in, Thread Heaven (seldom used and may soon go, brass stiletto and tweezers. Room for the thread I need or I put that in the project bag. Works great and you don't need 4.

I would think a sewing kit at least needs: scissors, pin cushion, sewing needles, thread, scissors, seam ripper
The problem is each project seems to need something you left at home.
bobbins, elastic, buttons, etc.
