I take mine out when each side is completely surrounded by another hexie. I don't always get to iron them right away either. I've never had one to misbehave since I removed the basting and paper.

Kristin M

I keep them in until all the sides are whipped to the next, and then remove them.

becky

If you have them secured to the background how are you able to remove the papers?
I wouldn't think you would want to slit your background fabric.

I always use Quilt Patis rather than the papers... however when appliqueing finished hexie motifs (any shapes really) I take out my foundations as I go. This way I'm not stretching things out as much. I like the 3/4" applique pins to hold just the corners of the "empty" pieces. Hope this helps you.

Sandi Colwell

I leave the papers in until the very end. I take them out right before I applique them to a quilt.

Simone

I don't I use INKLINGO to print the hex's on the wrong side of the fabric and sew. No papers no whip stitching!
Otherwise leave the paper in until each row is surrounded by another then take out the first. If it moves leave them all in and take them out last .

Quiltjane

For smaller hexies I use glue, for the larger I baste. I leave the papers in until I have sewn all edges of the hexie to another and then I take them out.

MarciaW

I'm not going to take my papers out until all the hexies are stitched together into flowers. Then will remove just the center ones. I doublepunched holes in the paper so can take a crochet hook to pull the paper out without messing up the fabric. Found that I get more precise corners when leave the papers in. As I sew the hexies into flowers, I bend the hexies in half if necessary. Most of my papers are cut from the stiffer paper from magazine inserts or lighter weight cardboard. I don't intend to reuse the papers.

joan reichart

I would also leave them especially since you are doing them in the car. It will make everything more stable.

Susan Foster

I leave them in until all sides are connected to their neighbors. . .but I'm no expert. :)

Lynn Provencher

I always leave paper in until my hexies are secured by another row around all sides

Grace

What size hexie's are you doing here?

Sharon

I'd solve that problem by NOT doing Hexies. LOL I'd play a game on my Kindle or read.

Lee Ann L.

I've been leaving them in. I probably won't take them out until after I put the flowers hexies together.

Jan

leave them in until all the joinings are finished.

LeAnn

I would leave them.

Kim

I don't use paper....I make plastic hex's out of plastic lids. Punch a hold in the center...tack the fabric on the back...keep the plastic in until I am away from that row and all is stable. It is VERY easy that way! AND the plastic hexies are reusable - repurpose and reuse is my motto! ;) ♥

Grace

I leave them in until everything is joined. Then I remove the paper.

Shelley

Leave them in, but you should probably pull over first. =)

Sue

Definitely leave the paper in, as with English paper piecing.
