Thank You for ALL the Birthday Wishes..
I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of Happy Birthdays notes.. I smiled all day!
If you follow me on Facebook and/or at my quilt group
you saw a BIG box in my hall from my mom
Yep.. this is what was in it!
My old singer sewing machine.
She bought it for me because "I needed it" to go to college
GOTTA love my mom!
When I upgraded I sent it back to her to use.. it's not been used in over 10 yrs. The shipping dept spent a lot of time oiling it yesterday... it is running pretty sweet!
ps... click the photo for a larger image
pps... yes it is a funky minty green color
and look where it is made
wow!
I will be putting some Aurifil thread on here ASAP
And I had a fabulous Latte and puchased this mug
because I'm IN LOVE with Vespas... and Italy....
I DO BELIEVE I need to come visit the offices in Milan.. you know... for research... wink!
SO, what was YOUR first machine?
(this was actually my 2nd but the first was on European currency)

And the winner of the "Litte Bits" book is Diane P who wrote
"My Grandmother was a seamstress in the Garment District and taught her three daughters to sew and boy! did they sew FAST! My Mother made her own clothes and mine too, as well as slipcovers, curtains, etc. She taught me to sew, but I never was as accurate as she was. I made some clothes, but nothing that could be worn outside the house (think nightgowns...). When I found quilting, I REALLY learned to sew. Matching seams was exciting to me and I'm still always happy when they match up. Thank you for offering to share the "Little Bits" book with us!"

My first machine is a featherweight. My dad bought it for me when I was in grade 9. What a dream machine, yes I still have it and use it.

My first machine was a little Sonata (made by Singer) that Dennis bought for me in a Joann's that was in the mall. I used it for about 10 years, then I got a Bernina. We gave my first to my MIL who used it for years. I don't know what she finally did with it.

My first machine was a Singer that I had in college. It was cream colored with very 70's detailing on it in brown and orange. I had it a very long time, but really did not use it for much other than mending and some doll clothes.

My first machine was a Singer. It is tan. I still use it to sew quilt blocks. It is still accurate and works like a dream. I have had it for nearly 50 years and used it to sew clothes for myself and my sisters when I was in high school, my kids after I was married, and then quilt blocks, curtains, pillows, etc.I have bought several machines since getting this one, but I always go back to it when I am in a hurry to get something done, because it doesn't have all the fancy settings and isn't as sensitive as my new machines are.

A pretty fun machine to have---your Mother is cool with color too--love the mint green---I so wish I had had a sewing machine in college......my first machine was a vintage Singer--yes- black with all the gold on it....my grandma's machine---it still sews like a dream...I eventually wanted a zig-zag something---but I love this old machine...who knew that we would someday sew on something that did everything but make coffee...

The first sewing machine I used was a singer treddle with the long bobbin. When I was married the first time I was working and bought a 1963 singer slant o matic. I still have it, but have since upgraded.

i think that minty green is gorgeous! My first sewing machine was a late 60's or early 70's Kenmore my mother taught me to use. My husband's first (yes - you read that right - my *husband's*!) was an Western Auto machine! It still runs like nobody's business, but we gave it back to his mother while we had our house on the market and haven't stolen it back since we moved. It's an absolutely gorgeous aqua color in a grey case, and most of the machine is metal - like yours looks to be. Those colors just scream 50's & 60's!

My first, and for over 40 years my only, machine was an Elna Transforma which I bought in 1956 as a straight stitch machine, getting the unit to use the cams with installed about 10 years later in Germany. It was top of the line when I bought it and more than repaid its purchase price of $300 over the years!

My first machine was bought by my MIL when I was pregnant with my first child and DH was still in college. I had to make maternity clothes b/c we had very little money. It was one nice thing the woman did for me. Also I passed the machine on to my DD when she was in college too and she made money with it doing mending for classmates men and women. She sold it to an arabic woman who pestered her for months for lessons. DD finally told her to back off. SHe got a whopping $25.00 for the machine. Probably what was paid originally by MIL who bought it used also.

My first machine was my Grandmothers machine - a blue/gray steel Brother machine that my Grandpa had bought for her in the early 1950's for $150.00 (I still have the origional Bill of Sale)!! She taught me how to sew on that machine when I was a toddler, sent it home with me when I took up quilting, and I still have it (and occaisionally use it) today! I wouldn't trade it for the world. In fact, the first machine I later BOUGHT for myself was also a Brother machine - and it is still my main machine that I use almost daily. LOL.

Pat - Thank you for selecting my name for the "Little Bits" book. I look forward to receiving it and starting a new "little" project!
Thank you, too, for sharing my comment about my Grandmother and Mother. They were amazing women.

First machine was a Singer and I think it was 534. My hubby bought it for me when I was pregnant with my daughter 32 years ago. It has since been sold (last year) and the gal is using for mending. It sure was a workhorse!!
