2010 Meadow Breeze BOM - Part 5

JUNE Part#5

This Part 5 of Meadow Breeze, a 9 part Mystery Quilt!! The quilt is both appliqué and pieced and finished to a 36" square.

I LOVE Dragon flys so put in a sweet little guy this month... afterall it is summer here in Virginia!

Get out your stuff!

Here is how I cut the 'donuts' for all these shapes. The stems and dragon fly parts i did not cut out the center.. but you could if you like!

I decided to lay out just this much and then stitch. This way I was sure the circle flowers were well inside the seam line. The bottom stem will be stitched into the seam.

I'm still stiching the whole quilt with my 40wt thread art kit. The dark green is done with 40wt 2887.

All the threads I am using are in my 40wt thread art Kit from Aurifil

Here is a tip on how I stitch all the green with out stopping. I 'travel' by changing from a blanket stitch to a straight stitch in certain areas. I also started this project right where the leaf meet the stem.

When I got the whole stem stitched I changed to a straight stitch. Be sure you watch where the needle position is when you change stitches. You may need to set it so they are in the same spot as often a blanket stitch is shifted off the straight stitch position.

Once I went to straight stitch I swivled the work so i could straight stitch on the edge of the blanket stitching I just did. I will go to the 'v'.

When i hit the 'v' I will change back to a blanket stitch and do the next stem.

Each time I want to 'travel' to a new spot I change stitches.. easy!

TIP - I went very slow when stitching around the tight curve. This gives me more control

Let's stitch the leaf and the dragonfly body with light green 40 wt 1147

All the peach and orange are done in 40wt 2210.. my peachy tone! The centers of the big dots are done with a different color... check it out!

40wt 2460 is a super burgundy shade.

I think it looks great for the small dots.. which I fussy cut by the way!!

I took a double strand of the same burgundy to stem stitch the atenna.

Here it is stitched. You could also use 28wt or 12wt thread for the antenna.

If you are not familiar with this fusible method, see my book 'Learn to appliqué' for how I do fusible and keep the shapes as soft as possible by cutting away.. plus it's economical as you don't waste fusible!

Quilt Cruising ... Do the Macarena!

No trip is complete without some DANCING! We had a little Macarena with our dinner one night...

it starts with waiter merriment... Sharon is ready to go!

Colleen and Lisa joined in!

Chris and Steve had to jump up to boogie... Kay and Diane cheered them on!

Joseph our waiter gave Karen and Sharon a personal lesson...

On to the class room for open sewing... much progress is being made! Pat is concentrating ..

Lisa And Cathy... we made Potato bags the first night to learn how to use the machine.. we wanted everyone to be comfortable with the equipment!

Our Bar Harbour Scavenger hunt was for LOBSTER.. all I said was 'Bring Back a Lobster'... they did great!! Deb and Kelly even took a lobster boat tour... fabulous!

Tomorrow I'll have Meadow Breeze part 5... woot woot!

ps.. thanks for the poutine info.. no we didn't have it.. kind of glad I passed it up!

Quilt Cruising... Halifax rocked!

Due to a scheduling conflict I had to move my guests to other days and I have a show rerun today with Susan Brubaker Knapp and Pokey Bolton of Quilting Arts...

We found Halifax to be a really fun port!....

resizing photos.. we never did find a hot spot we could connect to!

A really warm bag pipe welcome... we love Canada!

It's a really nice walk from the cruise ship along the boardwalk in Halifax. Restaurants, shops and a cool museum awaited us!

The Maritime Museum has some Titanic pieces

And yell into the mouth piece.. wonder what THEY yelled??? I think I'm yelling TIME FOR LUNCH!

Here we are at 'Saltys'... recommended by my dad!

After a great lunch on the water ... we walked up to the town clock.. I do believe it was straight up hill...

We went on to the Public Gardens which were beautiful! Yes.. I DID find a coffee shop in the garden!

After this we walked down by the University... lots of students singing for a tip.. and I love the round bulletin boards like we had in Europe!

This was a VERY interesting shop near a university... The painting on the outside is fabulous...

and I could have gotten some Batiks!

Save me some time... tell me WHAT THE HECK IS "Poutine"????

This shop really reminded me of Europe in a sweet pink way!

Walking back to our ship... It's the TALL one behind the building... and the view from the top deck is fabulous!

The Scavenger hunt for the Halifax port was a coffee sleeve signed by an employee.. we heard some REALLY funny stories on how they got these... including one person who is convinced she will be a famous actress... we kept that one!

Tomorrow some photos of the quilters sewing ... cuz I know you want to see them!

Look what came in the mail

This came in the mail before I left. "Nellie's Garden" designed by my friend Nancy Mahoney for P&B! I know Nancy will show us a knock out quilt in these ... and I am happy to add them to my collection!

And this... 24 fabulous 'new' Shirting prints called "A Fine Print".. you can never have too many shirtings for your reproduction quilts!  Also from P&B!

It's so easy to time travel with fabric.. which is YOUR favorite?

we are have a full day of quilting on the Cruise ship today and arrive back in Baltimore tomorrow!
